22 Years Of Supercomputer Evolution (Archive)

A high-end dual or even single-socket system with four GPUs should have about the same amount of teraflops as the 2002 Earth Simulator, but with far lower latency, since you don't have thousands of components spread out over hundreds of square meters. Amazing how you can have a supercomputer...

PSU popped suddenly, PC won't turn on now.

Technically yes, it should have, a motherboard with CPU and RAM in it at idle have extremely low power draw. You did say that you tested it without RAM installed, but that may have been part of the problem, there needs to be at least one stick of RAM in the system for it to boot.

PSU popped suddenly, PC won't turn on now.

Hard to say, I once had to fix someone's computer that had a PSU burn out exactly like yours did, and it was some cheap Chinese $15 throwaway; none of the other components were affected however. If something does get damaged due to sudden power loss or surge, the MOBO would be my first suspect...

Gsync vs 144hz vs Gsync 144hz?

It depends on whether or not your GPU can sustain 144 FPS in games, as the effects of G-sync are most noticeable between 30~60fps, but less so between 60~144. You could always go the best of both worlds and get a 144hz G-sync monitor, so that if the frame-rate does hit below 60fps, it won't...

Looking for PCIe dual x16 motherboard

Any reason as to why you would want to run 970s in SLI instead of say getting a single 980 Ti? Both options are around the same price. Generally, you want to get the fastest single GPU before considering putting in a second one in, as you have to deal with a few extra problems. First of all is...

    INTEL 750 PCI-E or SFF-8639 connection (ASUS X99 Sabertooth)

I would go with what looks best as well, which I think to be the PCI-E card variant. M.2 adapter on the Sabertooth means you'll need to take part of the thermal shroud off and have that ugly dongle stuck there + wires.

Z97 vs X99, or wait something new?

As far as Z97 is concerned, I would wait for a short while as Z170 is right around the corner, with newer CPUs and DDR4 support among other things. Even if you don't need these extra features, it's best to wait anyway as prices for Z97 will likely drop after the new stuff comes out. As to which...

Should I go with a 1tb ssd as my only storage device?

SSDs aren't as reliable for long-term storage as HDDs, a recent study shows that SSDs may lose data when powered off for long periods of time, however much solid state storage you have, you need at least as much in magnetic for backups. You can't simply add another SSD and expect it to run in...

Is there any difference in sound quality between front and back audio ports?

Connecting to the back ports is almost always going to result in better audio quality, since the front ports have to run across your case on poorly isolated wires and may pick up interference along they way, while the rear jack is closer to the source. Your motherboard doesn't feature a...

    4k or 1440p?

Unless you have a Titan X in your rig or similarly powerful card(s), there will be few recent games that you'll be able to run at full settings at UHD. Look into the Acer XB270HU: it's 144hz, 1440p, IPS, 2.75ms response times with no input lag, has G-sync and costs $800. I don't think there's a...

    Best x99 mobo

Just pick the one that fits your case and supports the features you want, like the number of ports, PCI-E slots, M.2 or go just by looks, as otherwise they are all functionally identical. You are as likely to get a good stable overclock on the $200 X99S SLI Plus as on the $450 Rampage V. Since...

    2x 512GB vs 1x 1TB (Samsung SSD 850 PRO)

I think that it wouldn't matter much either way. You could use one of the SSDs as a scratch disk for your graphic design software, so that all the wear and tear goes on a drive that you don't have any valuable data on, in which case the following setup would make sense: 512GB SSD OS and...

    Monitor advice (worth the upgrade?)

You didn't say what you're doing with your computer. If you do any sort of content creation, 144hz doesn't matter and you should get the panel that has the best baseline performance (color accuracy, viewing angles, uniformity, etc) If you only game and use the web on your computer then get...

    2x 512GB vs 1x 1TB (Samsung SSD 850 PRO)

I highly doubt that running two SSDs in RAID will significantly improve either of the things you intend to use your computer for, if you were editing 4K video or doing other storage intensive tasks, then it would make some sense, but as it is you're doubling the risk of losing your data for no...

Need a little clarification Regarding RAM

RAM doesn't have channels, the number of channels used depends on how many sticks you have plugged in. If you have a quad-channel system and plug in only two RAM sticks it will run in dual channel, add two more and it'll run in quad channel, and if you plug four RAM sticks into a dual channel...
