    Laptop (Linux - Development) Suggestions

Hey everyone, looking for some suggestions on laptops. I'm currently a student in college, and I have a desktop that I use all of the time. It'd be convenient if I had a laptop in some cases, so I'm coming here to get some input from you guys. 1. What is your budget? If I could stay below $400...

    New build, no power?

My first psu in my own custom build was an ocz 650w that smoked as soon as I turned it on, blew all of my parts :(. Moved to corsair, and this is the first problem I've had.

    New build, no power?

There was literally nothing. No clicking, nothing. It was a corsair cx600, supposedly a pretty reliable psu. Hopefully just a dud.

    New build, no power?

Just put a build together today for a friend, and when we hit the power button, nothing happens. I took a paper clip and tried to follow this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWXgQSokF4 This did nothing for me. There was no response from the psu or the fan. Is this a completely dead psu...

    4gb enough for gaming?

4gigs is enough for almost anyone. The only times you'd need more is if you're running VMs or doing audio recording/video editing on a high level scale. I run 4 gigs in my build and I game more often than not, never see my ram usage go past 60%.

Will my DVD drive play Blu Ray?...

I'll recommend the asus a 3rd time. A friend of mine picked it up and it runs great for him, not a single problem at all. It is a disc drive though, so you'd hope nothing drastic goes wrong.

Will hard drives stop working after idle for a long period?

I just pulled a drive that's been unused for almost eight or nine years out of a computer and it runs like a champ (albeit a mighty slow one)

Will I bottleneck with this card?

You should really be looking at the 6850 in that price range. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/541?vs=539 The 6850, as shown, performs much better and can be had for within $10-15 of the 550ti. Even there, you should consider the 6870. It's not too much more, and offers a pretty...

These specs adequate fro gaming laptop

the first one has a better processor, and the rest is the same. It's suggested value is almost 3x as much on intel's website. It also has hyperthreading. I'd say choice 1 if you have to choose between the two of them as long as the price works for you

Difference Between HD 6870 and HD 7870

The 7870 is far better than the 6870, hence the price difference. The 7870 isn't intended to replace the 6870. It's in a different tier.

    Phenom X4+6870 vs. i5 2500k+6770/550ti

the phenom chips are no slouch, they're plenty fast. a 6870 is much faster than a 6770 or 550ti, so I'd definitely recommend you stick with a 6850 at the minimum, preferably the 6870.
