This is embarrassing, my solution was that I had a program called InternetOff starting on boot, whenever this program runs: the name is self-explanatory. All I did was uninstall the program and it's back to working again!

May I recommend the i7 6800k or the 6850k, slightly same as the 6700k in performance + 2 more cores for a total of 6. Also be aware that since the 6800k has more cores, single core performance won't be as good as the 6700k but those extra cores might compensate ;)
