Just looking for some recommendations for upgrades

ah yes, don't worry about it. I did build a new PC and in all honesty, while the new machine is impressively powerful, when it comes down to actual gaming there's very little the "old" PC cannot do to a satisfactory (for me) degree. AMD's Zen is scheduled for Q4 2016. Hopefully it will stir the...

Just looking for some recommendations for upgrades

Heh - You should be seeing a green button labelled "Pick as Solution" under the text in each post (exception being your own posts afaik). Hope you enjoy your system, my own 1055T + R9 270x runs so well it made me question my decision to build a new gaming PC!

    Looking for a 1080 system

I know - I would have been suspicious myself, I didn't notice they were using 550W until you pointed it out. I felt sure someone would have asked the question and I checked in the comments.

    Looking for a 1080 system

The build I suggested are, as already mentioned, one of the PCPartPicker recommended gaming builds - it's the guys running the site that made it, it's not my own creation. They have a page and a video guide where they build the machine...

    Looking for a 1080 system

One of the recommended gaming builds on PCPartPicker will max settings on most games in 1080p. Win 7 seems to be more expensive than 10 right now, you might want to shop around a bit to see if you can get a better deal as it's $100 out of the $900 below. PCPartPicker part list...

Just looking for some recommendations for upgrades

You're welcome, glad it worked out well. 280x is one of the top performing cards at the moment so while it might be an overkill for your current CPU it will likely stay with you when you upgrade board+CPU, yes. If you mark my reply as solution I get brownie points ;)

Very weird failure to POST without some tinkering, can always reproduce. Please help!

"Relaxing" memory timings (i.e. increasing those numbers) can sometimes help avoid errors. What we're trying is to give memory a bit bigger windows to complete certain things rather than failing. There's detailed articles as to what the numbers mean, a place to start would be...

    Are my components compatible?

pcpartpicker.com has a built in compatibility check function. It will help you avoid basic incompatibility errors such as getting the wrong motherboard for the CPU.

Very weird failure to POST without some tinkering, can always reproduce. Please help!

I would try to set the memory timings to 11/11/11/24 on the BIOS and see if it makes a difference. Check if you have a BIOS update available. If this fails my next step would be to take it to the g.skill forum and see if they have any suggestions.

PC wont start with both sticks of ram

BIOS is probably not a bad idea. Try 1600 for the frequency.

PC wont start with both sticks of ram

Everything looks ok here. I would try to underclock the memory a bit and see what happens. You need to find and lower DRAM frequency in the BIOS. What you have would typically mean either incompatible memory or non-matching memory sticks. I'm assuming you have bought them as a pair so this...

My first build is borked from water damage! Motherboard fried?

I can only imagine how you feel. By working and trying to fix the machine you damage your claim. It's very possible that your motherboard has damaged capacitors (the small "transistors" you mention). Even if repairable you'd need to RMA it. I would expect that if you investigate your options...

Try to run CPU-Z (google for it) and post here screenshots of the tabs called "memory" and "SPD". It seems you have a pair of those: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ga-z87x-ud3h/CT4371578 and it's compatible memory anyway so it should be fixable.

PC wont start with both sticks of ram

Not a lot of things left to try imo, let's see: 1. PC boots fine just with 1 stick - is it always the same stick that leads to successful boot? Might worth to label them 1 & 2 and try to see if it's a specific one causing the trouble. 2. check RAM timings in the BIOS. or run CPU-Z (google) and...
