Turns out that for some reason Prime 95 was running in the background (even after rebooting it just started itself again). I uninstalled it and now my cpu is running normally.

It depends on what resolution you play at. And if you care about how long your computer stays good. The i7 is a bit more future proof than the i5 because of the hyperthreading (i predict that 4+ threads will start to be used in games more often because of the console world adopting 8 core cpus)...
