As mentioned above Ubuntu is the most widely used system but you should try LXLE (a fork from Debian / Ubuntu) which is specifically made to run on older or low spec machines is very windows like and friendly and has some great wallpapers !!

protonvpn.com has a free service hat you can use to try it out. [This is NOT a free to try for a few weeks advertising device - you can us it permanently, but it only gives 1 connection, 3 servers and medium speed. Swiss based, no logs it works fine]

Two things I would mention.: First I would download a new copy of the DISM to make sure that the sfc is checking the correct current version of files then run sfc again. Second try Explorer++ I found it a lot more stable than windows explorer which is very flaky !!

Try TextPad (included with every version of Windows) - it's a lite text fomatter. I prefer Libre Office (also free) - new version is very fast and reliable.

Sounds like the old laptop could do with a good clean-up too. Download Wisecare 365 (free) and do complete scans (various). I would also download Avast free anti-virus and run a complete scan. This should revitalise the Asus. You could also run sfc. You could also consider installing LXLE Linux...
