Discussion Why is Tom's Guide Forum Absolutely Useless?

A lot of forums are like this... I am on a couple of car forums and the support is generally best with the most popular cars or specifically ones where they like to tinker with them.. My Polo is not that type and often there is nothing in the way of replies for months.. plenty of readers...

[SOLVED] unusual question ; enable power saving

For information: I installed the GPU-Z utility.. very interesting to see what is actually drawing power and from where.. although the card is supposed to draw up to 170w.. it is not all coming from the 2 x 6 pin sockets! Most of the power (from a single source) is coming from the motherboard...

[SOLVED] unusual question ; enable power saving

I'm pleased to say everything is working great.. I can improve on case temp by fitting a fan to it.. The 120mm 'Be Quiet' fan I purchased by mistake a year ago, is too large for the case.. It looks more like 100mm. Not so popular out there..

[SOLVED] unusual question ; enable power saving

I decided to do as you advised... keep an eye on the connector . I also decided to buy just one branded adapter (2x SATA into 6 pin) for one one the Card's sockets and use the single original connector in the second one.

[SOLVED] unusual question ; enable power saving

Thanks for the link.. useful. are these adapters not a good idea? https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2555059.m570.l2632&_nkw=sata+to+8+pin&_sacat=182094 It would be a shame to have to replace the PSU (3 months old) as it seems over specified otherwise. thanks

[SOLVED] unusual question ; enable power saving

I know many questions are about disabling power saving but i want to enable minimum power use 'most' of the time. Why? I just bid on a suitable GPU.. (older model but up to it and in my budget) GTX 760 and after winning the bid found out later (I know.. schoolboy error)that it is one hungry...

[SOLVED] It was going to be so easy...

well I got the secure boot removed but my cloned drive will still not boot up without it going into attempting repair mode. I looked at the drive when connected to a usb caddy and it all look to be there and accessible.. just won't boot off it. Even if i want to do a clean install I still...

[SOLVED] It was going to be so easy...

Up till recently I have been doing the same.. last one was a move from internal SSD to NMVe inside a Lenovo Yoga laptop.. System image was the only thing that i could get to work as a USB NVMe caddy was/is very hard to come by.. (Plenty of M2 caddy's purporting to be NVMe) An external USB DVD...

[SOLVED] It was going to be so easy...

Thanks Not sure if you are referring to repairing the failed clone or the original system; the system is running fine but with a smaller SSD I think the original issue is getting lost .. LOL I just want to clone a working system drive with a larger drive and have it work when it is swapped...

[SOLVED] It was going to be so easy...

I have an ageing i7 PC and decided to make start on replacing it with another PC I got an i5 9400F which I was surprised has more cores than the old i7, though less threads It was a bargain with Win 10 already installed. But it had a small SSD so i purchased a PNY 480Gb at the same time with...
