    Crackling noise driving me mad

Thanks PassMark, I'll give that a try. I situated the noise fairly good below the heatsink though ... not much there apart from a cpu and some motherboard parts, so probably need a new motherboard :(

    Crackling noise driving me mad

Will try that, though it seems unlikely: a vibration would have a more constant frequency, as would a fan problem. But this noise is more like the random ticking of an old hard drive.

    Crackling noise driving me mad

Thanks for the help. If it may make a difference for other people with ideas: it does seem increase with computer load, not in volume but in frequency. At boot it is absent till I log in (terminal login, if it matters).

    Crackling noise driving me mad

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I double checked the power plug (@PassMark), do not have an optival drive (@SR-71 BlackBird) and the screws that are reachable seem to be fastened tightly (@huntersw2). The paper tube tip (@Karsten75) didn't really reveal anything, since I have a rather big...

    Crackling noise driving me mad

It's been a year now since I put together a basic build for daily use. One thing I like very much is silence (when it comes to computers). Alas, some time ago this lovely system began to make some crackling noise, not unlike the HDD clicking of my (much) older pc ... only this one runs with...

Is Macbook Pro good for me?

Indeed, an i7 is unnecessary for everything that doesn't need heavy multithreading. A 4th gen i5 would be a much better choice, imho. Battery life of most ultrabooks is reasonable to very good. But if you can afford it, by all means buy a Macbook. They're very good hardware, I'm just no great...

Need Help Deciding Which Laptop To Get

Looks like you already made up your mind, and I agree it is the best choice out of the two. Still, i voted 'other' because that i7 is extreme overkill. An i5 is perfect for gaming. Also, sli may give you slightly better graphics, it will suck a lot more from you battery. Of course that is no...

    Low Budget build for gaming

If those are your only options then, like tiny voices said, corsair is the only real option you get. About the hdd I suggested Seagate because they're (in general) equally reliable, but it's a bit cheaper than WD. Crossfiring a gpu with an apu will get you only a minimal advantage over the gpu...

    What to buy?

What's the price difference between the acer and the fujitsu? If it's not much, I'd still go for the acer, but otherwise the fujitsu is a good choice.
