Solution found: this is an issue with Windows Insider. You can fix it by going to the registry setting under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\microphone and changing the "Value" key from "Deny" to "Allow"

Yep, microphones work perfectly in Ubuntu.

Oh, sorry, what I mean by non physical is simulated, i.e. a software generated audio input device. Also, all the microphones had been working previously. And I suppose I should have clarified that yes, I have tried other ports.

Like I said, even non-physical mics don't work. It is DEFINITELY not a hardware issue.
