Hi all,

I am looking to build a new rig with a budget of approximately £2000+ (GBP). It has been years since I built a PC so I am inexperienced and would appreciate any advice you can offer on the build given below.

Thanks in advance.

Budget: £2000 - Happy to go over budget if the benefit/value is significant enough.

Just a couple of suggestions:

1 - The MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X Trio is a stellar card and revied very, very well and is now at £829.98 so not only will it save you money..its a beast..

2 - The ADATA SX8200 480GB NVMe M.2 SSD is another stellar drive with 3000 reads and 1700 writes and another one that has been reviewd very well at Toms and others and only £131.59 - Its at least 6 times faster than the Crucial at the same price...

Thanks for your response vMax - I added your suggestions to build 2 (I couldn't find the exact card you linked in pcpartpicker).

Mobos are by far my least knowledgeable area as I tend to just look for reviews and compatibility and go with it. Is there one you would suggest in place of the Asus Prime?

Please note, whilst I aim to spend around £2000, this is not a hard ceiling, so if there benefit/value is there to go up past £2000 then I will.

Thanks again.

Hi mate, no issues at all..

with regards to motherboards, here are some options at variuos price points:

ASRock z370 Extreme 4 is a good all round cost effective motherboard reviewed very well and at £137.99 and for the price is excellent...from eBuyer https://www.ebuyer.com/807788-asrock-z370-extreme4-motherboard-z370-extreme4?mkwid=s_dc&pcrid=51482416619&pkw=&pmt=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmPPYBRCgARIsALOziAOT3UCYNt1QnoGr26tOp6pSENuZX5kKk27h1eGAkb0pdbIKl2VphwgaAu7eEALw_wcB

For top end Motherboards ASUS Maximus X Hero is an excellent board with high marks in the reviews and does it all at £230 including 5GHz + overclocks (dependant on cooling): https://www.ebuyer.com/807534-asus-maximus-x-hero-motherboard-rog-maximus-x-hero

My personal Motherboard is the Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 which for me is great and overclocks my 8700K to 5ghz (I have a 360 AIO) but be warned it is RGB galore!!!! it is £229: https://www.ebuyer.com/807499-gigabyte-z370-aorus-gaming-7-motherboard-z370-aorus-gaming-7

Both the Asus Hero and the Gigabyte Gaming 7 are great for overclocking with really good VRM phases but are not a must at all as most mid range to high end motherboards will do a good job. If you are going to overclock then making sure you have good VRM phases is important and the Asus Hero, Gigabyte Gaming 7 and ASRock excells in that area both with the Extreme 4 and with this one the ASRock Taichi at £180...You get a lot for the money!: https://www.ebuyer.com/807794-asrock-z370-taichi-motherboard-z370-taichi

Choices, choices...You cant really make a bad decision...

Interesting! from the options I'd take the Asrock, however this is dependent on what you think about the following question :).

A friend is pushing me towards purchasing a quad-channel architecture mobo for future-proofing, which means I will need to revise my CPU/Mobo/RAM choices. Do you think this point has any merit to it?

I would rather spend the money if it'll save me in the long run.

Thanks again!

Quad Channell!!!!!.Unless you are a productivity person and run a business that requires seroius editing, rendering, encoding and computational work...certainly not. For the best gaming and some medium productivity then stick with z370 or Ryzen...With regards to future proofing, this setup will do you more than well for at least 3 years and more..

Quad channel in the x299 Intel Skylake X or Threadripper platform is a much more expensive platform and certainly will not be a great use case if Gaming is your first focus. In fact the 8700K outstrips even the highest end Threadrippers and Intel Core i9 CPU's in gaming...

Great! Final build is below with your recommendations included. I have upgraded the cooler to a H100i as I had some spare money in the budget.

Thanks for all your help, do let me know if you contest any components. My only hesitation relates to the Seagate HDD as I know they have a history of failing, but I could not decide on a better 3TB or 4TB alternative.

Thats near perfect...the only thing I would say is you can save a bit more by buying a fully legit copy of Windows 10 Pro from ebay for around £5 to £10...Dont worry they are legit and I have had 2 already with no issues...Just to make in clear, ever since I saw Pauls Harware on how to get a liget copy of Windows Pro cheap, I have never looked back.... check these youtube videos from Tech Yes City and Pauls Hardware who will confirm..

Have you chosen the H100i V2 for its size and looks? Noctua NH-D15 is an excellent air cooler. It's about 10 - 20£ cheaper depending where you get it + it cools better than the Corsair variant. Only downside is its size and not every case can fit it. But your case can fit it, no problem there. The cooler also constricts RAM space, depending on the motherboard, high profile RAM like Trident Z RGB might not fit. There's is a downloadable template from Noctuas website where you can make a paper model of the cooler and see how it fits or just ask Google for help and see if your chosen mobo/ram combo can support it.

Just a little suggestion. H100i is by no means a bad AiO, but there are better solutions for lesser price.

Edit: This should help out - https://noctua.at/en/nh-d15/comp

Thanks ritvarsdavis, I'll investigate the Noctua before I purchase a CPU cooler.
