Great. The minute I finish downloading the .95 romset, there's a new
one out. Typical.

It's a real shame that they didn't go with a truly free license. I fail
to even see why they made the change at all. Of course I can fully
understand the trouble allowing commercial use could bring them, but I
don't think avoiding a potentially angry company is a good enough reason
to compromise freedom. Besides its not like MAME has even remotely
questionable legality so what do they care if someone else gets in trouble
for selling it with roms?

Do you *really* think that the source of MAME is only to use it playing
games?
Don't forget that there is tons of proc. emulators (and a debugger for all
this procs.) in it.
Software compagnies could use this code for their own purpose and sale their
program
as if it were their own code.
Think about MESS... it is a mame derivated and free. Without any licence
MESS developpers could sell it without any "coins" to MAME developpers ;-)

Thats what free software is all about.

Please give some examples of what you would do with the mame source
were commercial use allowed. What difference would it make to you?

I don't know about Capt. Rotundo, but if commercial use was allowed, I
would paint the Mame logo on my lawn mower and make Pacman noises as I
cut the grass.

That concerns the trademark license, not the code one. I'm sure we
can get an official authorization for your lawnmower, if we can be
sure of the accuracy of the Pacman noises.

Now that is an interesting question! I don't know what I would do if I
bought the right to use the source code as I see fit. I am struggling
to think of one single commercial application, especially as the
'original' which you would be competing with, is free 🙂

Yeah MAME just has its source available and for free (gratis). Similar
situations, very different results.

I think it would be more appropriate on a weed-wacca-wacca.
