Error 0x0000007b means - incompatible sata controller mode is being used.

If you change motherboard, it's highly recommended to reinstall windows.
Trying to avoid reinstall will result in:
boot mode compatibility issues (system doesn't boot),
driver compatibility issues (bad system performance, bsods and crashes),
windows activation problems (not possible to activate windows).

no way to avoid this? would prefer to not have to reinstall windows.

It will not be so easy.

  1. find appropriate sata controller mode, that doesn't cause error 0x0000007b;
  2. boot into windows and delete all old drivers manually;
  3. install new drivers manually;
  4. deal with activation problems.
It will probably take you several days to fix all issues.
dang, what about system repair in the f8? could that possibly fix the issue? looking at any other options here.
