100% cpu usage?

Hello, I recently upgraded my video card from a GTX 650 to a GTX 770 4gb card. But I'm still using the AMD Phenom II x4 cpu and MSI 970A-G46 AM3+ AMD 970 motherboard. But when i launch some games they use 100% of the cpu...or at least they seem to spike then go down at certain points.

Tried out games like Everquest Next Landmark and Call of Duty Ghosts... Is this because of my cpu/motherboard? Or could there be another reason?

I think your CPU is bottlenecking the GPU, so the CPU works it's hardest to try to prevent bottlenecking. Upgrade you're CPU, and you'll be fine. The motherboard has no problem with you're CPU or GPU, so like I said, upgrade your CPU to prevent this.

Happy Days!

AMD Phenom II x4 can't bottleneck 760 as such because it is a good CPU. Anyhow can't rule this option out. Try to free the CPU bound resources free and then play games or if convenient overclock CPU a bit and hopefully it will resolve the issue. Update the drivers of the graphics card as well.

PS: This can't be the motherboard.

I dont use any software...i was just checking my task manager and noticed the 100% usage..

As for the rest of you saying the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu i bet it is...but i was getting this 100% cpu usage before I upgraded my GTX 650 to GTX 770.

And I dont really know how to OC my cpu, or if my system has enough cooling to do so.

well before atempting anything what psu do you have?exept an aftermarket cooler you also need a good psu unit.

my PSU is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148046

Dear this PSU is an average one. Not a good PSU. Sorry to break it out like that. If you are using stock cooker then pl don't overclock your CPU. If you think it is PSU then try using other PSU and see the results. If symptoms persist then it is not PSU but CPU otherwise you'll know.

I dont not think this PSU has to do with high CPU usage...he was just asking what the PSU was to know if it would be a good idea to OC the cpu.

well we have a bad start here.http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx. yous psu is listed as a bad one and need change asap. i wouldnt try any overclock with that psu. gtx770 is quite a power hungry gpu with 42A reccomendation for the 12v rail. your psu may have a 49A total for the 12v rail but better not stress it to the limit.

Would upgrading to this PSU be good? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139029

12v * 23A = 276w
12v * 26A = 321w
276 + 312w= 588w

But the rated wattage under both +12v rails would be less than 588W. This is how comparison is made.

Also that is only 650 watt...would that be enough for my GPU and an overclocked cpu?

having an good and quality psu is a good start for a succesful o/c. other than that since you arent experienced with cpu tweaking better also buy an aftermarket cooler. sooner or later you will have cpu bottleneck. either you o/c you cpu or buy an fx 8320 one.all this make sense if you are playing on 1080p if not stay put.
