My CPU usage always shows 100% in task manager. It bounces between processes and even lists some that are not running taking up cpu time. System is Ryzen 5 2600X, MSI Arsenal B450 (latest bios), G.Skill DDR4 PC3200, WD SSD 1 TB, Geforce 960. Most programs work fine but when I do a save as or an attachment in Thunderbird or Gmail I get a not responding error. Eventually it will clear and do the process but it can take anywhere from 30 sec to several minutes. I have run memory tests, prime 95, voltage tests, and hard drive tests with no apparent failure. Could there possibly be something wrong with the CPU itself? Thanks. Doug

Yes on the hub. Shut down apps. System is up to date. Chrome says (31). I only have 3 tabs open. Task manager is still bouncing between 50% for chrome and 50% for task manager application under processes.
I know Chrome is a big resource user, but didn't know it that big of a hog. Are you certain it's up to date?

If your Windows is up to date I'd suggest opening Edge (it's a really fast Chrome based browser now). Import bookmarks from GChrome. Then uninstall Google Chrome. It's not really necessary, Edge is fast and very efficient now...and compatible too. But if you hate using MS apps...go get Firefox. It's also fast and efficient even with 11 tabs open.

and BTW, do not worry about the 'system idle process'. It commonly...
Chrome is up to date. The strange thing is it keeps bouncing back and forth between how much cpu time it uses. Chrome was 84% a few moments ago. Now 66%, 46%, 25%, 49%, 58% etc. When chrome goes down Task Manager application goes up. When chrome was 29% Task Manager was 51%. Thunderbird is the only other application I have open and it's at 0%.

I shut down all the start up processes and it didn't make a difference. I'm only running Windows defender. No third party antivirus.
Are you familiar with Glary Utilities? or CCleaner? they're useful for finding things and cleaning up trash applications that can get set up in the computer by other applications. Google i known to install things (like google drive which backs up your system and keeps it synced in the background) you weren't aware of. And don't appear in the System Tray.

But you have to be careful as CCleaner itself will install Google Chrome if you don't do a custom install.

Many computer shops will just run a CCleaner cleanup on your system when you bring it in with complaints like this. Then charge you $90 for the honor.

I ran ccleaner a couple of weeks ago and it didn't make a difference either. The only thing that really is slooooow is doing a (save as) or an (attachment). Can take up to a minute or so and I get a not responding error that eventually goes through.

was the hub connected at that time? are there any drives of any sort attached to that hub? when was the last time you defragged the HDD? and have you ever optimized the SDD?

OH...and forgot...
You may have just run the Custom Clean process in CCleaner. Did you also look at Startup Apps? It's on the TOOLS button, Startup. Is everything as you expect...startup apps but also windows service. That's where things that creep in will show up.
