Installing gtx 1050 Ti GPU and getting a black screen on boot i.e. the monitor is not receiving any input.

More info:
- model of GPU: https://www.gigabyte.com/graphics-card/gv-N105Toc-4gd-rev-10-rev11-rev12#kf
- fans and lights work fine. Case fans spinning as usual, as are CPU's, GPU fans spin on boot then stop after a couple of seconds.
- switching cable to on-board GPU with 1050 ti installed leads to same black screen with no input
- on board GPU works fine once 1050 ti is removed.
Model of 1050 appears to be motherboard-powered only. No apparent plugs for extra power
- motherboard's GPU slot is a PCIEX16
- a quick Google search of compatibility between my motherboard and the 1050 Ti comes up positive.

System:
ASUS H81M-K motherboard
Super Flower 550W PSU
i5 3.1 ghz 4th gen CPU
2x 4GB DDR3 RAM

Try on-board GPU without plugging the GTX 1050 ti. Boot. If you happen to have had an old GPU prior to the GTX 1050 ti, download and install DDU (https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html). This will uninstall previous drivers related to old video cards that may be causing the issue. Shutdown PC. Plug in GTX 1050 ti. Boot. Go to BIOS and check/select dedicated GPU as primary display. Continue to operating system and download driver updates from Nvidia for your GTX 1050 ti.

Will update BIOS now. Had already tried all combinations of cables. The problem seems to be that when the GPU is in, neither it not the onboard will even load up the BIOS screen.

As for scrubbing previous drivers, I hadn't thought of this either. Rebooted to safe mode, scrubbed and shut down. Installed GPU. Same problem: with the GPU installed neither it not the onboard will put out a signal to the monitor; can't access BIOS. Changing BIOS boot settings to favour either does nothing.
