So I'm planning on building a PC in the next couple weeks. I was going to buy a 970 with a 1080p monitor, but my friend told me I should wait and get the 1070. I thought this was a good idea, but then another friend told me to stick with the 970 because I'm going to buy a 1080p monitor. So the question is what should I buy? The 1070 or the 970

Solution
You could just buy a decent card for cheap and then on the release of the 1070 try and get one. Or just wait a little longer for the "custom" cards to come out. Unless they come out with the launch of the cards directly from Nvidia. I don't exactly know since I just built my first PC in December so I don't know how launches works. But, it's a thought lol

Also the G2 is great PSU

Wait For $235?! Whoa that's crazy cheap.

My GTX 970 does occasionally struggle at 1080p maxed out, especailly in the heavily urbanised areas of Fallout 4(drops for 60 to mid 40s fps).
The 1070 "will" have no such problems.

970 is still a great option and is sure to last. There is the R9 390 if you want another option that runs the exact same as the 970 and better in a few situations. I have a 390 and have had 0 problems. It's also generally cheaper than the 970 if you are trying to stay within a budget.

I also think a 970 is the best choice for 1080p gaming, today. Mine is doing OK, even on the poorly optimised Hitman at ultra ...
Older games are totally great with it. Borderlands 2 runs at 130 FPS on ultra.

My build is 1 year old and my future update path would probably be a 1080 fully OCed. But that will have to be in 1-2 years, when the price tag has dropped to less than 350 E.

Sure can, it's this way every generation of card. Early adopters always dump their cards for newer models and they are cheap 2 months prior to and after the release.

Since you're already going for a quality 750W unit, go for a SLI capable Z170 motherboard, that way you'll be able to slap a second 970/1070 down the road. As you're asking what GPU to get, just wait for the benchmars, they'll come tomorrow, but is more likely that the 1070 is a better choice.
