Hi,know this is a common thread i have just purchased a Acer Predator XB271HUA 27" monitor.
I currently use a GTX 1060 6GB,i am aware this is not powerful enough for 1440p at good fsp.
The question is do i upgrade to a 1070 or 1080,the price drop of a 1080 is very appealing but is it overkill?
Any help would be appreciated sorry for the noobish question only moved over from consoles 6 months ago.(loving pc gaming btw!)

Solution
I know budget is important.

I really have to emphasize that you should save and wait a little longer and get a TI.

Look in my profile for my older build that has a Strix OC TI.

I honestly play most games at Ultra(blur off, chromatic aberration/lens flares off, AA at FXAA minimum but SMAAx2 occasionally) w/ G-Sync. Games like Witcher 3/Mass Effect Andromeda/Planet Coaster/GTA V/Metro's/Crysis 3/Mordor/Doom/ROTTR/Batman AK(mainly testing for laughs) all average 90-100fps. Dips are ~50-60 and peaks 120. Less demanding games are much much higher.

A single regular 1080 will be around 20-30% slower than a TI. The cooling and OC ability on the TI's are amazing compared to the 1080's. I've OC'd mine to 2012mhz/5805 cranked the fan profile...
I would personally get aftermarket GTX 1080Ti models for 1440p/144Hz gaming. Thougj the GTX 1080 would also suffice (but might slightly decrease in-game settings on AAA ultra graphic/eye-candy-intensive settings).

I won't consider the 1070 as it would only suit 1440p/~60Hz monitors.

I also have 2x1080's in my other rig so I'm one of the few who have both on hand to compare. 1080's run quite a bit hotter when you try to get them to 2ghz. To keep them at 2ghz steady I have the fans cranked and they hover around 70-80c.

Seriously, get a TI and you will be much happier for it.

Your RM750i should be fine. The reviews I read on Guru3d & HardOCP showed OC'd versions using just over 300w, 350 around max. The general rule of thumb is to have a PSU rated double the wattage of your estimated use for optimal power conversion from the PSU. In this case you'd be close to the middle one way or the other. If you keep to stock settings it'll probably be closer to 300 maybe less.

There are some who will say the Vram size is overkill for 1440p and I totally agree but the issue here is really the clocks. The TI clocks are the best bang for the buck. Even if you get a card and don't OC past whatever it comes as they're all pretty fast and quiet. When I left the Strix to its factory OC it still went up to 1900-1987mhz and 5500mhz with a very quiet FAN and holding 60c or less. This has been my first x80ti card and I can honestly say I'll never go less again. Just not worth the regrets or headaches.

I can honestly say that a single 1080ti is only slightly(maybe 10-15%) less powerful than my 1080SLI setup. The SLI gives that little oomph for mostly solid 60fps/4k and that what those are used for.

I don't believe the TI's is a true 4k card(mine avg's 45-55 fps in Ultra) they're really really close but at 1440p/144hz its a perfect match and G-sync takes care of the rest. At 1440p/144hz this card will kick but for many years to come even at stock settings. Just make sure your CPU is up to the task. My 2600k @ 4.2ghz is holding ~50-60% most of the time.

Ah that's good then one less thing i have to buy, everywhere ive read come to the same conclusion x80ti is the way to go for my monitor.
Im running a i7 4790 no k what ive also read this cpu should be ok for now.
Think my budget can stretch to another £700, 750 at a push so are the founder editions ti's ok ? as they are closer to my bugdet
Some of the partner ti's are very expensive.

GIGABYTE GeForce AORUS GTX 1080 Ti are just under 700 too.
This pc gaming is a expensive hobby! Much more than my old x box! Think I'm learning fast thanks to the helpful experienced pc community.

The founders ti's are still faster than a 1080, but they run really hot and don't OC nearly as well as the partner cards (due to thermal limitations). What is the price difference between the 1080 and 1080 ti for you and what kinds of games are you playing? PC gaming is an expensive hobby if you want to max everything out, keep in mind that there are major diminishing returns on your money as you buy more expensive items. The best bang for your buck is around $800-1000 for the tower and a 1080p 144hz monitor IMO.

Mostly like to play new AAA titles, lots of bf1,bf4 just want a gpu to complement my new 1440p 144hz monitor, have been using 1060 6GB with 1080p 144hz ,i7 4790

The other nice thing about the partners cards are that you really don't need to anything to them other than give power and air flow. They pretty much take care of themselves from there.

I totally agree about the expense, this is it for me for a while other than maybe a SSD here or there. I'm happy with either of my builds and they each will do whats needed of them for at least a couple years more.

Well considering you have £700 to spend, I would almost recommend looking for a used GTX 1080 to use for the next year or so and save the rest for an upgrade during a future generation of cards. At least where I live, all the people who bought 1080ti's are selling 2-3mo old cards for $400-450. If you can't find a deal like that, then getting a 1080 ti is probably your best option. I'm personally OK with running at high-medium settings and can run 4k 60hz with very few dips under 60 on a 980 ti, so if you're ok with turning the settings down from ultra a 1070 or 1080 will be just fine for the time being.

Yeah the 980ti's we're the defining moment for me. I had a pair of 560ti's and they were awesome for the day. Then I saw 780ti but couldn't afford it, then I got 2x970's because the price was just too hard to beat and SLI was still getting solid support. About 3-6 months after I got those the 980ti's came out and it really got annoying reading all the great reviews everyone gave them and by then I couldn't afford one. Two years later I was on the fence with getting one right before the 1080's. I got tired of waiting and jumped on my 1080's and mostly happy, a little buyer's remorse for the money. Now that I have a 1080ti I'm so amazed and never going with anything less again. The only hard part is that I'm pretty sure it'll be 2-4 years before I really need to consider getting anything else(GPU wise) for either build now.
