So I have my gaming pc hooked up to a optoma gt1080 projector. My gpu (r9 290x) has hdmi and dvi ports but the projector only has hdmi. My problem is I want to game at 1080 120hz but I'm stuck with the hdmi ports on the projector. The projector is 120hz but i can only enable that refresh rate if I set resolution to 720. So is there any way to get 1080 with 120hz

I can enable vsync in game or force it in amd control panel. But the missing frames is still noticeable. I know it won't but just to double check, will a dvi to hdmi cable give me more bandwidth?

Hello... They are the same Video Digital signals in both... But there is physical limitations in how a cable performs in transmiting the signals, and there are "versions" and "ratings" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI Typically they show up for me when you are tring to make a long run with one and your will see "loss of signal" errors. But Yes... cable construction can make a impact on on your Signal. You might want to check with your local AV custom install store for their input and thoughts on your situation.

There are a couple issues here.

1) Your projector likely does not support HDMI 2.0. If it does not support HDMI 2.0, 120hz is out of the question, though it might support HD3D at 720p@60hz (per eye) if it supports HDMI 1.4a. This is done through frame packing, and does not translate to normal 120hz mode.

2) Your video card does not support HDMI 2.0. Even if the projector supported it, your video card doesn't.

No, it doesn't. At least not in a traditional way. It can get 120hz through frame packing, but that will increase latency, as it has to wait for 2 frames to be rendered before they are sent to the monitor to be displayed 1 after the other. They are using a 3rd party program to do this, which may not be a terrible thing, but it is adding some latency.

Normally this is only used in 3D, with both the right and left eyes images sent at once.
