Hello all,

Curious on what monitor to get... Currently looking at a 1080p 144hz G-Sync monitor also a 1440p 144hz G-Sync monitor... Both are TN panels. 1080p is the Acer Predator XB241H bmipr and the 1440p monitor is Dell Gaming S2716DG , The 1080p monitor is about $390, while the 1440p is about $520..

I have a i7 6700k, with a 980 ti hybrid... Between these two... what should I get? I understand I have the horsepower for 1440p right now but I won't be upgrading for a very long time... So I figured maybe the 1080p would be the better option for longevity, and also to save a little bit more money.

Any opinions would be great! thanks!

There is no card on the market that will do 144FPS on 1440p in every game :) Same...
I'm in the same situation more or less. I have a 5 year old 24" Asus 1080P 75hz monitor and a GTX770 and plan on buying either a GTX1080 or 1070 in the next couple of months. I would really like to upgrade my monitor to a 27" as well and was strongly considering a 1440p. I would still consider another 1080p of the 27" variety if it was 144hz with Gsync.

In my opinion if you are like me and tend to upgrade your monitor only every 4 to 5 years you should go for the 1440p although 4k would make more sense but your frame rates won't be nice with that 980ti in 4k running games at max settings. Please post what you decide to do.

I'll be buying it in about two weeks time.. So... But yeah, The 1080p monitor seems nice, get some nice fps out of it. Would help a bit in FPS games, which I do play(Soon to be Battlefield 1 :3). But the 1440p would look amazing, and it is bigger... Just worried in 4-5 years time... The 980 ti won't be able to hold high to ultra settings on a 1440p monitor.

I am wanting this upgrade for BF1 as well and currently play mainly BF4. I know what you mean about frame rates. I would like to maintain what I get now on my GTX770 (80-90 FPS) but crank everything up to Ultra. I am running a i7 3770k @ 4.3 GHz by the way.

Lots of opinions out there on the GSync or non-GSync monitors. I think it will be a good thing to have as our GPU's begin to show their age. Also I still believe the TN panels are the way to go for casual gaming especially in shooters like BF. Funny thing is I just bought my first 50" 4K television this Christmas and these damn monitors cost more than the TV did!

You'll probably keep the monitor longer than your GPU though so that it something to consider.

I have actually been looking at the AOC monitors too because they have been getting good reviews. I was looking at the G2770PQU because I've been wanting a 27" vs another 24". The G2770PQU is also a 144Hz but doesn't have Gsync. Not sure if that would matter much or not for me running 1080p on a GTX1080.

Turboshine,

Since you are at 75hz already my monitor is less of a recommendation than for op, getting a 1070/1080 will fuel 75hz/75fps all day.

For both, don't worry about killing 1080p with too many fps, new games are very demanding to max w/high hz and I even turn things down a little to keep min fps very high while still maintaining very high visuals. I actually plan to get the next 1080ti and keep my monitor, dsr on my monitor adds an even crisper look when using the 3k to 4k resolutions.

I just ordered a Acer XB270HU Abprz on newegg. Slight sale at $570. I am on an amd 380 so I know the gsync will be wasted.
Ive always been on 1080p@60, TN so figured I'd treat myself. Buyers remorse is already setting in, so I hope it is nice.
I thought about a 1080@144 but thought about spending that much and just getting more Hz. I've yet to see 1440p OR 144Hz so I figured id get best of both worlds here. And the gsync will solidify my want for a 1070/1080 when they are in stock at a normal rate.
I've been playing mostly Overwatch and Street Fighter V. So for some games that dont honor more than 60 Hz like SFV, I can go 1440p. For overwatch I'll see if 144Hz is as great as it sounds, otherwise I can adjust and see if 1440p seems better and go from there.

There is no card on the market that will do 144FPS on 1440p in every game :) Same goes for 1080p@144Hz.

Now, for convenience, it's good to have 1440p at 27". It looks better for smaller objects and text.
1080p on 24" is also fine.
So if it was for me, I'd just think what fits better my desk (24" or 27").
And you replace the GPU far more often than your monitor. so go wild for 27" or may be even 21:9 34" 😉

Yeah I'm hoping to get my hands on a 1080 in the next month or two. I refuse to pay the premium for a FE version though. Probably could get by with a 1070 but I want the faster memory, clock, and increased shaders to have a little more future proofing as I typically keep my cards for 3 to 4 years before upgrading.

In that case, simply lower the resolution to 1080p. At least then you have the option of using 1440p for the games that will run smoothly. I recently upgraded from 1080p to 1440p (60hz mind you) and the difference is substantial.

A word of warning, some games are arbitrarily locked to a sub-144 frame rate by the developer. The same goes for aspect ratio; some games will only support 16:9 natively.

I cannot tell you how beautiful this Dell S2716DG is!!!! My GTX770 will only go to 120hz refresh max but Battlefield 4 is smooth as butter @ 2560x1440p & 120hz! I am also surprised that even with all my settings on high I'm still getting about 80 to 85 fps. The level of detail seems so much greater than ultra settings at 1080p. I just didn't think it would be this good but it was worth every penny. I could probably just get a 1070 when they come out and I'll be fine but I think I will spend the extra $$ on the 1080 since I saved $100 on the monitor.

Damn, sounds good. I just got the Acer XB270HU for $570 which was on sale, not as good as the shocker deal.
I'm having 2nd thoughts as I've found 3 dead pixels so far, I can only have 120Hz as highest option, and it only has the 1 Displayport input.
I see newegg apparently ran that deal twice, last week and in May.
I used newegg credit so Im stuck with them and rather not pay the return game on a chance for something to run on sale again.
I cant see why the Acer reg price $800 vs the Dell $620..
