1080p 144hz or 1440p 144hz monitor for R9 390?

I'm looking to upgrade my monitor. From what I know so far 144hz is the way to go. I'm just stuck between which resolution to get.

To start off, I like to browse the web and watch videos and movies. I also play a lot of video games. Currently I'm playing: The Witcher 3, Tekken, and Overwatch.

The 1080p side will be a safer bet, because I feel it'd handle it and take advantage of the 144hz. Though, I already have a 1080p monitor so I'm already familiar with the resolution.

The 1440p side would be more expensive, but it'll be good in the long run if I choose to upgrade my GPU. But I feel at the moment with my R9 390 card it wouldn't take advantage of the 144hz since it'll struggle to run games because of the higher resolution. But 1440p from what I heard is much more sharper and much more room to work with. Plus 1440p would be a new experience for me.

Which monitor would you suggest?

I would say it depends on what size monitor you want to get, if you are looking at around 24" then i would stick to 1080p, if you are looking at 27" then go for 1440p.
Are you looking at freesync monitors too?

Yeah I have looked into freesync monitors. I would like to get the bigger 1440p monitor. My card just wouldnt take advantage of a 144hz 1440p monitor, is what I feel.

The 390 will struggle to reach 100+fps in modern titles with high detail settings, if you play games like cs:go, league of legends or overwatch then you can easily hit those high fps.
