Hi Folks,

I just recently bought my GTX 1070 GPU and I'm wondering what monitor should I get. My current monitor is a Dell E2211H 1080p 60hz monitor and since I was able to save $300 (originally I was going to get the 1080 but I changed my mind) I was wondering if I should get a 1080p 144hz or a 1440p 60hz monitor. Here are some keypoints so you can help me decide:

1. I want atleast 60fps in gaming with all the settings at max and atleast 2x AA (or maybe consistent 60fps with vsync on)
2. Based on my research, TN panel is better than IPS when it comes to gaming and in my country (Philippines), all I can see are 1440p IPS monitors. Is it true?
3. Is response time a big deal when it comes to gaming? Folks from the internet says that the ideal response time should be 5ms or less. If I chose to buy a 1440p monitor, the monitor with the least response time available here is 8ms.

I appreciate your help guys. Thanks.

For a 27" panel I'd go for 1440, the GTX1070 benchmarks show this card running that rez at over 60FPS even with the settings at max (or near max) although those are average frame rates, you'll certainly see dips below that in sections in some games.

What you could do, when the '1070 arrives and is installed is use the DSR function in the Nvidia Control Panel to simulate 1440 rez on your current display, it won't tell you how the visuals will look on a larger monitor but it will allow you to see how the performance between different resolutions differs and you can take it from there.
1070 can run 1080p 144hz and beyond, however it will struggle with 1440p 144hz but will be able to output more than 1440p 60hz so for me the best monitor for the 1070 is a 144hz 2560x1080 monitor. There are many of those but you can't really afford them. That's why it would be best to get a 1440p monitor. TN panel is faster than IPS, speed makes a difference only in FPS gaming. If you play FPS gaming, it's never about quality, it's all about speed, that's why 1080p TN 144hz is the choice for FPS.

I forgot to mention that if Im going to get a 1440p monitor, I am already satisified if I can get atleast 60fps. Im not expecting a high refresh rate for 1440p because I know that this resolution will give my gpu a workout. So based on what you said, should get a 1440p?

Thanks kysarvs. But if Im going to get a 1440p monitor, 60hz is enough for me. I`ll just turn on vsync and hope that my framerate will not go below 60fps to avoid input lag.

Gingerbread - Im playing almost all genres of games but most of the time its FPS and RPG like witcher 3.

would highly recommend the rx 480 though, it is basically the performance of a gtx 980 for only $ 200
thats half the price of the gtx 1070! and 1070 is only about 30% faster than a 980.
480 is the real bang for the buck for 1080P

What size of display are you looking for?

At 24" a 1080 display is probably the best option and for gaming a fast TN panel is ideal, the downside is that you'll have to pay extra for the privilege of Gsync, although AFAIK you could get a Freesync 144Hz display and use that as a normal but very fast monitor through the Nvidia control panel Adaptive Vsync option.
You could go for 1440 at this size, but the higher rez can make text small and difficult to read, although as a plus you won't need to apply any framerate sapping AA.

At 27" you're really going to want a 1440 display, 1080 rez is a little too coarse for such a large panel, again, for gaming a fast TN is best.

Unless you're playing online and/or competitively I wouldn't worry too much about input lag.

IPS panels are a little slower but generally have better colours and viewing angles than TN.
TN panels are usually much faster than IPS and the current ones aren't far behind in colour accuracy either, viewing angles are narrower but, again, the current models are OK for gaming.

@Jaycen, Im not a fan of AMD though I appreciate your suggestion. My previous gpu was GTX 970.

@coozie7, yes I'll be getting a 27" monitor if Im going to get a 1440p resolution. I both play online and offline games. I actually play all genres specially AAA titles. So are you suggesting that I should get 1440p instead? 60fps is more than enough for me but I don't want to go below that.

I think most here will agree that at 27" 1440 is pretty well the sweet spot for size/rez/cost and if you're happy with 60FPS look for an IPS/PLS type display, their colours and viewing angles are better than TN panels, don't be put off by the 'slow' <>5ms response times, at 60FPS the difference between that an a faster TN panel is nil in the real world.

Be aware that at that rez, even the GTX1070 is likely to drop below 60FPS at times in certain games, especially with the eye candy turned up to full, best way to avoid that is to keep AA to a minimum (you won't need much anyway 😉 ).

I agree with you coozie! For my last question before I finally buy a 1440p monitor, is 2x AA with 1440p better or equal to 1080p with 4x AA? I know that AA settings eat a lot of resources on my gpu so if I turn down AA a little and it will give me the same or better results than 1080p with 4xAA, I know I can use it to boost my fps a little bit! Kudos! :)
