So, I just built a new computer and I’m looking to upgrade the monitor i have to a new gaming monitor. I know I want a 1ms response time and 144hz. The last thing I’m not sure of yet is wether to get 1080p or 1440p. I’m mostly gonna be doing gaming, hence the want of a gaming monitor. Here are my system specs.

Ryzen 5 2600x
GTX 1660ti
16gb ram

I debating because I don’t want a monitor that is too much for my system (1440p) but also don’t want to get a monitor that my pc could do more (1080p) if that makes sense. Any input would be great! Thanks!

What type of games do you play? If esports the 1440p will be ok with your gpu, however if the latest AAA games and you want high FPS I feel a 1660ti is too weak. I’m running a 2080S @ 1440p and to achieve an average of 120+ FPS in the games I play I have to compromise on a mixture of settings with medium/high/ultra. So even with a much stronger gpu I am compromising settings to get FPS that are satisfactory to me.

Tough choice. Your monitor is typically the least upgraded part so I'd probably go with the 1440P/144hz. I'd push for a Freesync version with DisplayPort so you can utilize the Freesync with that Nvidia GPU. And for your competitive games adjust for a higher FPS.

As 1660Ti I wound recommend 1080p. As for now many high-end 1080p monitors are been discounted.
1660Ti would run on/above 60FPS most time on 1080p monitors
but on 1440p you may experience significantly FPS drop in some of games.

Does the 1660 ti really struggle at 1440P?

On every test the settings were set to max and come close to 60hz or exceed it (AC: Odyssey is poorly optimized and still runs around 50 FPS). Also with a Freesync monitor it will help keep the games smooth even with some dips. For competitive titles most of us turn down the graphics besides view distance to keep the FPS high and to turn off the flashy distracting stuff.

Thanks! I play all kinds of games so the 1080p will probably be better.
