1080p PC display to a 4k TV, how to make it look good?

I was using a Samsung F5500 (1080p) and I switched it for a Sony X850C (4k) as a PC monitor but I'm not really sure why I'm finding the quality not to be as I expected. It doesn't feel like an upgrade, if anything, more like a downgrade in quality.

The Samsung screen looks sharper and crisp, very clean, while the Sony is kinda blurry, and the sharpness is to the point that if I add more, it starts showing some pixel artifacts.
On Windows it's very noticeable and apparent, on games it seems to be by case (GW2 looks HUGELY different to the point it's ugly on the Sony and beautiful on the Samsung, while Tomb Raider or Metro 2033 they look pretty much the same).

I thought that if the PC signal is 1080p and the TV 4k, it would look exactly the same as PC 1080p and TV 1080p, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

This comment here seems to know exactly what I'm talking about, and he too switched from a Samsung to a Sony, and this is what I'd like to ask more about.

Is it a brand issue, like Samsung having a better screen overall as PC monitor?
Because for movies I have absolutely no complaints for the Sony.
Or is it because it's a 1080p PC signal to a 4k TV, and I'd get this same "issue" with any brand?
Me too, like the commenter, I'm almost getting buyer's remorse because it's feeling like a downgrade.
When I do get to play a game at 4k I can notice the upgrade in quality by leaps over the Samsung, but it's not often that I do, I have a single GTX 970 and while it CAN run games at 4k, I do feel some FPS drops here and there so I play on 1080p.

Is the only "fix" for this issue to play at 4k? Is it a misconfiguration (I've been playing around with the configs thinking I might find some magical setting that makes it look exactly like the Samsung)?
Are there any other things that I can try to improve the PC image quality besides the 4k resolution?

I read the other topic but I'm not quite sure what the issue is, and I'm asking to decide if I should keep this new 4k TV or if I should just stick to my old 1080p Samsung...

@Dr Girlfriend
sorry, but not correct.
besides that, you read its a tv, not moni?
so most likely not an option to swap for a monitor/different screen depending on use/setup/cost...

and pixel density has NOTHING to do if its a moni or tv, just the screen size and resolution.
meaning i can have a UHD 50 and it will provide almost identical ppi than a 24in 1080p monitor.

@Danicchi
set windows to 2160p (if you dont see any input lag) or 1440p.
games to 1080p/1440p.

the chip in the tv will upscale it, so you wont need to waste money on buying a new gpu.

sony has more than a decade upscaling 720/1080 to 4K/UHD in almost every theater in this country, other brands wont be close,
so unless you want to go oled, no need to switch brand/screen.

i sold 2K/UHD/4K screens for +2y, and had side by side setups displaying FHD content on a 1080p and a UHD tv, and you could instantly tell the difference even without the signal being native 4K/UHD.

you can also try the game setting from the picture-settings, which will reduce processing by the tv and lower input lag even further, but i havent seen more than 4-5ms (30 vs 35ms) which isnt "worth" it to me, since i like to run certain settings that would get disabled (in game mode).

Wow, I dunno why but it's as sharp/clean as the Samsung now, maybe even better!
I was just switching from 1080p to 2160p and never considered the 2560x1440. I'll have to try some more heavy games to see if I get FPS drops but probably won't be as much as the 4k, since it occurred only on some graphics intensive parts.

I still don't understand why the upscaling from 1080p -> 4k in the TV looks bad and the 1440p looks beautiful again, but thank you very much!

"try 4:4:4"
yeah, forgot about that.
make sure to set the tv to deep color (all inputs).
i dont work in retail electronics anymore, but if you can take pics of all the picture settings the tv has (send a pm),
i can tell what to use..

@esco_sid
hope your playing FPS in pvpv mode with that ping...
