1080p vs 1440p

I'm having troubles finding the right monitor I plan to build a new gaming pc soon with a gtx 970 and the problem I'm having is should I stay with 1080p or go with 1440p is there a big difference between the two. The monitors in question were the asus rog swift or the benq xl2420z.

There is an option in the middle 2560x1080 21:9 aspect ratio - helps in certain games to see stuff you would not see normally
