1080p vs 1440p?

this is quite the hardest decision on buying a gaming setup. I currently have a 1080p laptop and it's display is quite great, and I am wondering if 1440p offers a great upgrade. I will go gsync and I will never get a monitor without gsync. I usually play games and I sometimes do simple gimping, but my pc will be for mostly extreme gaming. So, what is the good decision for me?

1440p of course it will look a lot nicer. The more pixels make dark colors dark and light colors really pop.
