TL;DR, Half plugged in GPU, crashes on game launch and erratic graphical errors, seeking any form of assistance.

Hey all,

I recently got myself a 1080TI after finding one on the FB marketplace, and soon after I found it wasn't quite working how it should be.
I didn't know that it was possible to not have a GPU click into a PCIe slot and not be fully in which is what happened the first time I plugged it into my motherboard and I didn't even notice for a good while. Basically, the I/O for the GPU was too long and it prevents it from plugging directly into the PCIe without a riser.

For a while I assumed it was just software etc and tried to troubleshoot it using DDU and looking at thermals etc but it wasn't throttling nor was it being limited by power.

I have tried:
Reinstalling Windows
Updating Windows and drivers
Uninstalling drivers with DDU and reinstalling them
Swapping the GPU in the PC (Works fine with my 980TI)
Watching thermals when it crashes, around 70C
Watching Task Manager and it always spikes to 100% usage right before the crash when loading into a GPU intensive game

I'm not really sure what to do in this situation as it's a £500 card but it's not quite dead so I'm clinging to the hope I can do something to rectify my mistake.

I've got a Cyberpunk crash log at the moment but I can always get more to give a more in depth look.

My specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: ASUS STRIX 1080TI
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance
PSU: Corsair VS650 650W
MOBO: ASUS Prime B450M-A

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated as I really don't know where to go from here.

Thanks loads!

Good evening all,

I installed and booted the PC with the new PSU and.... no dice. It still runs like before and spikes to 100% etc.

As for undervolting it's also not something I can do, initially I thought it was the ASUS software when it froze and slowed my PC when I tried to change values on the GPU but it's not, it happened on afterburner too and because of this intense freezing I really can't adjust anything on the GPU.

The behaviour has also worsened, I had a few times where patches of pixels went green and flashed for a few seconds randomly.

I'm no real expert but I think this may be beyond saving, I await your responses.

Thanks.
I'm sorry to hear this. The green pixels and flashing are indicators of a dying GPU. I was there once.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you.

Is your GPU still half plugging?
Does the crash happen to other games?
What does the Cyberpunk crash log say?
I bought a riser so it's fully plugged in now.

It does happen to other games like Metro Exodus for example, but I can play less intense games like osu! still.

The crash log is at the bottom at my post but the important parts go something like "Message: Gpu Crash for unknown reasons! Callstack here is probably irrelevant. Check if Breadcrumbs or Aftermath logged anything useful."

That's just a instruction for the guys at CDPR to know what to do with the crash report. You should find the crash log at a similar address to this: [C:\Users\A\AppData\Local\REDEngine\ReportQueue\]
Look for the folder that match the time you got the crash.

Did it crash on certain games that use Unreal Engine?

I've found the real report here, thanks to you, but I'm not really too sure what I'm meant to pull from it.

As for the crashes I think it's on any intensive game, so anything that requires a GPU basically, like I said before, I could play osu! which is just a circle clicking game without any real issue bar from the occasional odd graphical glitches.

Oddly enough, the first time I had it plugged into the mobo (halfway) I actually managed to almost load into Cyberpunk, but after fully attaching with the riser it doesn't get past the initial loading screens to the main menu.

But essentially the card just seems to spike to 100% at some point for a game, typically at the start when I launch and then just crash it.

I have a GTX1070 OC MSI and I had the same issue. It used to work great then came a time when it just crashed at every game I try, including games it was able to run before. I searched the Internet and found a solution. Basically, I use Curve feature of MSI Afterburner undervolt my GPU.
Here's how I did it: https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkgame/comments/nrh2ly View: https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkgame/comments/nrh2ly/regarding_crashes_after_patch_121_and_122_for/

Hope it could help you and let me know if it could.

This is a grand suggestion, although I have tried it and failed, as to whether it was my fault or not I cannot tell you, it just didn't save any changes when I made them.
I also tried GPU TWEAK by ASUS and that really didn't go well, it just seemed to max out my CPU and I just wasn't able to find out whether or not it would work on the card.

I'll try afterburner again and look at a tutorial or two to ensure that I'm not just being daft.
I'll keep you updated and thank you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
A reminder, I did failed a few times before I could find out a suitable frequency for my GPU.
But what do you mean when you said it didn't save any change you made?

I meant every single time I set a new clock speed or fan curve I would click save and it would reset to default values rather than my new ones. About to try again.

A Corsair VS650 is not a good choice for powering a 1080Ti, it a low quality unit. My guess is the gpu is spiking to 100% when it needs to in game but the psu can’t handle the power spike and causes your crash.
Hate to second guess you but it seems fine in theory and Amazon reviews seem to back this, the previous owner said it'd be fine too, so I guess you're meaning more for the bronze rating?

I did see power draw stats when it was running and it was only at 70%.

Have you got any other PSU suggestions?

CV is the lowest quality unit in the Corsair lineup. On the Tom’s tier list it is tier D, here

Ideally you want a Tier A of 650w or greater

From your past experience do you reckon this would probably be the reason behind the crashes and if not is there anything else that comes to mind?

Thanks again.

You'll have to click apply for it to run, the tick icon should do it.
One more thing, when I told you about the curve feature of MSI Afterburner, I mean this:
https://www.google.com.vn/search?q=msi+afterburner+curve+editor&sxsrf=ATn3GzC4AWgNah5AWjodngzkSeUoV8gL9F:1626660219912&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjotc_Ehe7xAhUEU30KHfiTDEMQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1920&bih=927#imgrc=rdHHgBdOeNEEzM

You'll have to press Ctrl + F to open it.

I cannot say for sure. An inadequate psu can cause stability issues and it stood out when I saw it listed. A more adequate psu is a investment in the safety of your pc regardless of if it’s the cause of the problem.

@Slimological Exactly this. I had that exact opinion while reading this thread and was about to write it.
CV series have been a common factor in many threads in this forum in the past years.
Your issue might be caused by many other things but the smart thing to do is to upgrade your PSU. High end GPU (even past generation) needs at least a good PSU and yours is not even mediocre.

Good evening,

I've read through your posts and I thank you all for your input.
Hopefully I will get my new PSU (NZXT C650, thanks for the list sizzling!) tomorrow before work and I'll have an update to the situation.

Thanks again for the help thus far!

Damn it's as I had feared, I guess I'll just have to cut my losses at this point as I've thrown everything I could think of at it at this point.

Thank you for all your help.

You should find someone near your place who can check your GPU up. After all, It's only my speculation.
