Hello everybody,

First time poster, long time reader.

I recently upgraded to a 12900K and got the Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 motherboard to go along with it. I kept my ram from my previous build, G.SKILL TridentZ for the Z370/X299 chipset (I just realized that it was for this chipset).

My issue is that I can only run my ram on the new build at 2133mhz and whenever I enable XMP at 3600mhz or 3200mhz, I get the black screen of death. I've reset the bios and everything is stable but the RAM is still clocked at 2133mhz.

So I'm wondering:
Am I out of luck with this ram set and should buy a new set? (Not ideal since I spent the bag on the new CPU)
How much performance am I leaving on the table with the RAM clocked as is?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Yes. I got the latest bios version and I'm using 4 slots (4x16).
Set XMP to the 3600 then change the speed to 3000.

They don't really make memory for specific chip sets so what is listed here was probably the most recent ones when the memory was listed for sell.
Newegg listing specifically states Z370/x299

For the motherboard QVL it's a good place to start but it is only a list of memory they have tested with the board and they have nothing even close to all memory made to test with.

As a test try 2x16gb. Was all the bought as a single kit or are you mixing 2 kits?

Bought as a kit. Testing 2x16 now.

That Newegg listing specifically states Z370/x299. I was under the impression that RAM could be, mostly, compatible with any chipset. Is that not the case? I know some motherboards are picky with certain ram sticks but this particular motherboard doesn't have a list of compatible ram. So, I assumed any would do.

Hello!

This motherboard does have a compatible RAM list.
Here’s the link:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z690-GAMING-X-DDR4-rev-10/support#support-dl

Please check if your exact RAM model is listed there.
If it isn’t, you have 2 options:
  1. Wait for a BIOS update that might add compatibility to that specific model.
  2. Buy a RAM kit that is listed on the QVL.

Post a link to the newegg listing.

This worked. Running at 3000mhz. Wish I could push to 3200 or 3600 but I'm happy with 3000mhz and the money I saved from not buying a new set.

Thank you.
