Question 12V power connector on motherboard

I am building a pc for my neighbors child from leftover parts I have. My motherboard has a 8 pin 12 v connector but the power supply only has a 24 pin and a 4 pin. Can I use an adapter for the other 4 pins of the 12 V or an adapter for all 8 pins along with an 6 pin adapter for the graphics card and not cause issues? 400 W power supply. First generation I7 MB Evga GTX 650, 1 HD, 1 dvd drive .

What motherboard model you have?

Ok, so for that motherboard you need a PSU that have the 8 pin power connector.

What CPU? A 4 pin connector can supply up to ~190W in theory, so you should be OK. You may not even need an adapter, could work with the just the 4 pin plugged into half the 8 pin receptacle.
