I bought a 1440p monitor last year and loved it, recently I sold that monitor and got a 1440p 144hz monitor with GSYNC. I have had a lot of problems with it though so I returned it, and now I was wondering since I just sold my 770 and bought a GTX 1080, if it would be better to go to 4k 60fps with maybe gsync or go back to 1440p 144hz.

What is your opinions on both? I enjoyed the high FPS but to be honest I couldnt tell the difference of anything over 100fps. Does 4k really look that good, especially compared to 1440p?

What is your opinions on the 2 resolutions, and maybe some good monitor recommendations, under $800.

For the smoothest experience go for 1440p. But in answer to your question, does 4K look that much better: yes...
I think that 1440p 144hz is the way to go to be honest. It is likely that you either picked up an Asus ROG Swift monitor, or got unlucky with backlight bleed or dead pixels etc.
I would recommend the Acer XB271HU.
It is 1440p, 165hz overclockable via a setting in the menu, G-Sync, and comes with a very thin bezel allowing for multi monitor setups in the future.
The reason I don't recommend 4k at the moment is that unless you're hitting a constant 60fps or very close to it, you are not going to have a great experience. Unless you're going SLI, 1440 will suit you nicely for now.
G-Sync at a resolution which is the sweet spot at the moment paired with a high refresh rate panel makes for the best experience with a GTX 1080, as even if you go SLI it still leaves room for improvement should you upgrade to next gen or ti cards.

For the smoothest experience go for 1440p. But in answer to your question, does 4K look that much better: yes it does. It is a glorious sight. My set up is 4K and never stop marvelling at how fantastic it looks. The resolution is double that of 1440p so it stands to reason. The 1080p should be enough to give you a decent experience and remember, you can turn off anti aliasing at 4K whereas you cannot at 1440p without compromising visuals.

If it were me I would say 4K but it depends on your priorities.

The monitor I returned was actually the Acer XB27HU lol. The black light bleed was really bad, there was a few dead pixels, bad ghosting, and after a while I got a line down the middle of my screen that would distort things. I think I may have just have gotten a bad egg. It is still annoying though, since my other monitors were acers and I had no problems with them before.
