Ok so I know that the 1070 can handle 1440p but not 144hz. I prefer good quality . People keep saying to go 1080p 144hz if u play competitively. I don't play competitively but I still want to play competitive games for fun. Will gtx 1440p at 60hz be smooth enough for me not to regret it? I like games like dayz, subnautica ,arma3 and I also would like to.play a competitive game like bf1. Will I be satisfied with 1440p 60hz?

I purchased a GeForce GTX 1070 today and had the same questions as you... I've searched the internet for days to find an answer that suited me.. But no luck... I just went to the store and bought myself a BenQ Zowie XL2730Z (144hz TN-panel 1440p).
My previous setup was GTX 780 with a 24inch 75Hz iiyama 1080p monitor.
And I must say until now I don't regret my purchase even though I have only played a few rounds of BF1... The 144 Hz is awesome, it runs smooth. You even notice it when minimizing, maximizing or moving windows on your screen. Everything just goes much smoother than before.
But anyway, I still got a few questions but I hope I'm getting these answered soon.

Weird thing here is, I've installed everything and so but was unable...
Yea definitely it will be smooth, but yet 144 Hz is still noticeably good. I play on 1080p 75 Hz anyways competitively and i don't see it that bad. Just don't turn on vsync and let your fps maximize then you are fine.

The 1070 will not hit 144 fps on a 144 hz monitor, so don't waste it on that. 60Hz without vsync is smooth enough. If you get 144 Hz then you won't use it to the fullest potential

Actually a 1070 is best for 1440p and greater than 60Hz. If possible get a 1440p 144Hz monitor. If you want to game at 1440p 60Hz then you'll max out a lot of games. The 1070 is like my 980ti and it performs incredibly well at 1440p. I play BF1 and get around 80fps.

What monitors are you looking at?

Envy14tpe for some reason. I can't reply when using my phone but I havent really looked into the 1440p monitors yet. Preferably Asus. Also you said if possible get 144hz 1440p, but why since the 1070 won't hit a high fps on 1440p

If your system cannot handle 1440 p then yes lag lol
But if your system can handle the resolution and it works, then you will not see a huge difference. Just make sure vsync is off and you get 80 fps. Getting 80 fps on a 60 Hz monitor will not lag, but 80 fps on a 144 hz monitor will not be BDUGET friendly.

personally I'd think about getting a 1440p 144/165Hz screen with G-Sync.
usually you'll be using a monitor much longer than you will be using your GPU
so buying a nice monitor that you don't need to upgrade when upgrading your GPU might be not such a bad idea

with G-Sync gaming at 70-100fps shouldn't be so dramatic on a 144Hz display

There are a couple $300usd 1440p IPS 60hz monitors but I can't comment on actual speed. I almost bought one but went double price and got a 165Hz monitor instead. For fps gaming it has helped me, but for slower gaming style it isn't important to have beyond 60fps (in my opinion). I am a fps gamer and need beyond 60fps.

What is your budget for monitor? I really do suggest you to go for 1440p IPS 144Hz monitor though.

Weird thing here is, I've installed everything and so but was unable to select any refresh rate above 60Hz for some reason.
But within the Geforce Settings pane, I could create a custom made resolution which I did. I've created a 2560x1440@120Hz, applied it and seems to work.

No idea if this answer helps you with your question. But I thought I'd share it with you...
