I was planning on building a new gaming pc soon and I would really like to stay on a budget at around $2000 including the monitor. I was planning on getting a gtx 970 my question is there a big difference between 1080p and 1440p?

It depends what you're aiming for. For more responsivness and faster gameplay 144 hz is the way to go if not with 1440p you will see a much better display of everything with a greater resolution which will bring you much better and sharper looking colors and overall games with the more pixels there are. All up to you!

if you like REALLY high fps, go with the 1080p solution. if you want a better looking overall setup, go with the 1440p setup, but theres another option around 2000 bucks:

this is a great 4K 2000 bucks setup. 2 970 is great for great 1440p and lite-good 4k gaming, hence the 4k display.

hope this helps :)

It does look a lot better on 1440p, 2d games have a lot more detail that becomes visible in the artwork and everything will look noticably sharper.
3d games also benefit as you can pick out a lot more detail (first thing I noticed playing battlefield 4 at 1440 was how I could make out much easier enemy helicopter gunners and pilots) and jagged edges are reduced greatly but you do still need some AA enabled really.
If you can appreciate image quality, I think you will find such a monitor offers a worthwhile improvement.

You are likely going to need more that 1 gpu however if you want a smooth gameplay experience in modern games. A single 970 just won't cut it for 60 fps in modern titles at 1440p, but if you stick to games more than a year old then they should be fine on a single card.
