1440p Gaming Help

What would I need to get to achieve 1440p max settings and 100hz or above frame rate. For a good price, I'm thinking of going as simple at a 1080. But I'm not sure if that's overkill.

Are you talking about a full computer? Yes a GTX 1080 will handle it, especially if you want "max settings" and high refresh rates at past 1080. Maybe a 1070 Ti but it seems you are looking at top performance.

Max settings is a tall order, there are a handful of games a 1080Ti may struggle with maintaining 100+ fps. If you lower a few settings then either a 1080 or 1080Ti will do.

As for cpu a 8600k would be an excellent choice or even 8400. The best is a 8700k but that comes at a much higher price.

There are actually a decent number of games that the GTX 1080 will not be able to get 100 FPS with max settings at 1440 resolution. See link below for some benchmarks of the GTX 1080. There are no benchmarks for 1440p, but if a game is getting less than 100 FPS at 1080p, then at 1440p FPS would be even less.
