my gpu's a GTX 1080ti
monitor's a VA2715-2K-MHD
it was manufactured in 2023-07-07
Hello to all of you, I've been having a peculiar problem with my new monitor.
The Problem
It's a Viewsonic VA2715-2K-mhd. I got it aftermarket for an incredibly good price. I am sure it's that monitor as it still has it's stickers in the back for it.
I've been having a few issues with it, mainly it seems that the monitor just can't handle being put at full brightness without turning off - but, besides that, and since I never will use it at full birghtness anyways, it's all fine.
my real problem here is with the refresh rate. it's advertised to be a 100hz 1440p monitor. the 1440p part checks out, but I can't seem to get it to display at 100hz.
Cables
I have tried various HDMI cables, but only one of them I actually somewhat believe the quality of - it's supposed to be a "high speed with ethernet" cable, and from reading into it a bit, seems those cables can't handle 100hz at 1440p.
Different Resolutions
So i thought that perhaps I could try lowering the resolution and trying different refresh rates, like 1080p at 100hz, but that doesn't seem to be an option at all. Infact, right now I can pull 75hz at 1440p, but not 75hz at 1080p.
I really want to figure out if the problem's actually with my monitor or my cables. I bought a display port cable this morning but it was flickering and doesn't work very well even on another monitor. I don't trust the brand, and it was also still stuck at 75hz, tried two different ports on my gpu but, no option for something higher than 75hz even at 1080p.
I know I can possibly fix the issue with a new display port cable that's trustworthy and at the very least 1.3, but I can't get that right now and I just want to know the monitor's not the fault here.
Questions + Other things I've tried
Is there any way for me to reach 100hz at 1080p with the hdmi cables I have right now?
could the fault be the monitor's drivers? I downloaded them directly from viewsonic's website page for the monitor
I also tried to check the user manual/qucikstart guide but nothing at all pops up for the refresh rate.
I don't know if I need to enable something like gsync or a refresh rate setting in the OSD, perhaps freesync? there is a setting for that on the monitor's OSD, but since I'm using an nvidia card I can't imagine it is necessary. None of this is mentioned at all on the monitor's guide.
using a custom resolution with the control panel (even something like 800x600 at 90hz) keeps giving me a black screen with an "out of range" dialog box. so I'm left perplexed if this monitor can actually display 100hz or not?
