Hi, I will be having a GTX 980ti in my build and I was wondering if I should get a 1080p 144 hertz monitor or a 1440p 60 hertz monitor. The two monitors I am looking at are the BenQ XL2411Z and the Acer G257HU. I know the 980ti has the power for 1440p gaming and that would be awesome if I could game at that resolution. But, 144 hertz at 1080p would also be awesome for the smoothness of 144 hertz.

All feedback is appreciated :)

If you are going to give 700 euro/ dollars for a gpu, why not buy the best monitor available too? I am talking about Acer XB270HU, which is 144hz matte AHVA with G-Sync.

Otherwise, pairing the 980ti with a relatively cheap monitor seems kind of a waste.

If budget is a concearn though, it is up to you if you would rather have 144Hz or a higher resolution. My suggestions:

144Hz 1080p: LG 24GM77 (cheaper and better color presets and contrast than the BenQ)
1440p: Asus PB278QR or PB278Q (for the latter make sure it does not use a PLS panel but an AHVA, otherwise it suffers from PWM dimming). It is more expensive, but then again Acers tend...

I would get with 1080p 144hz. A lot cheaper and the fps is amazing. Once the price drops for 1440p and a second gtx 980ti, get a 1440p 144hz.

Personal preference. It's going to depend on the games you're going to play, & how much of the "eye candy" you want displayed.

For example, CS:GO is apparenlty a popular game but doesn't stress machines too much, & for most people they'll have no trouble hitting 100+ FPS on benchmarks even with the settings on "high" or "ultra' equivalent. On a 60Hz monitor, the extra 40+ FPS is wasted, because the monitor can't truly display the extra FPS...but a 144Hz monitor would be able to display it. OTOH, if you're looking at more recent games, where even a 980Ti might struggle to make it to 70 or 80 FPS on "medium/high", then a 144Hz monitor is going to be wasted unless you turn the setting waaaay down...but a 60Hz monitor will more easily allow for tuning your quality settings to a higher level while still actually noticing the difference.

Unless you are playing super heavy games and MSAA/AA turned up, you can get 100fps+ on almost everything. Refer to games (skip witcher 3, metro, and crysis, I know already) that have trouble with this?
