1440p vs 1080p 144hz vs 1440p 144hz

Hi,
I've been using a 27 inch 1440p IPS for a few weeks now and am really liking the upgrade over my 24 inch 1080p monitors.
I'm still using a 24 inch 1080p monitor as a secondary display and am looking to upgrade. I've been looking at 1440p monitors, 1080p 144hz g sync monitors and the acer XB271hu.
Unfortunately no local stores have demos of the xb271hu or any high refresh rate monitors at all and I'm rather hesitant to drop $1000 (Australian) on a xb271hu considering I can't demo one in person first.
I can purchase a 1440p or 1080p 144hz monitor now but I would have to save a little extra for the XB271hu, is it worth it?

I can personally tell you from having a 1080p 144hz monitor for a long time, that it makes a huge difference compared to 60hz. Its just so much smoother and more satisfying to play with.
I dropped 899 on the XB270HU a while ago, and have no regrets. The colours are amazing out of the box, and even better with calibration.
The only difference with the XB271HU is 165Hz overclocking (Reportedly looks the same as 144) and a thinner bezel.
My advice is get the XB270HU if you have the horsepower for it or will soon with the upcoming cards.
If not, get the BenQ XL2411Z, still a great monitor.

I was going to purchase the xb270hu but my local MSY is out of stock and when you add on shipping the xb271hu is only an extra $50. I have a gtx 980 currently so i should be able to run most games pretty well with a few settings turned down, do you think it's worth grabbing a gtx 1080 when they're released if i get a xb271hu?

i'm on the acer 1440p g-sync, it's lovely, with a 970 i'm getting nice frame rates at med-high setting on the division with g-sync smoothing out any issues.

The acer is sounding pretty good so far, just wondering how effective g sync really is?. As much as i hate screen tearing it's the stuttering that really bugs me when you drop below your monitors refresh rate with vsync on. Does g sync eliminate the stuttering and screen tearing really well?

I think so, i've set the screen to 120Hz in windows (144Hz casues the GPU to run at 3d clock speeds when just doing windows). No stuttering when i'm playing at 50-60fps. I'll turn it off and come back to you later on this evening (8+hours time). I don't notice frame rate dips at all.

If you run a GSync 144Hz monitor with high fps e.g. over 100 fps average with e.g. 90 fps minimum. You won't really notice anything if GSync is on or off.
GSync shines if your rig can only run between e.g. 40-90 fps. Not only to get rid of any tearing but also to make the game somehow smoother.

And that's exactly what going up to 1440p will do for you, drag you frame rates down into that kid of space without a massive investment in GPU power.

How much are TV's in AUS? You might be able to find one which can do 4k 60 Hz as well as 1080 120 Hz. GSync/FreeSync can be nice to have, but it's a niche market.

You got that wrong, the stuttering isn't as noticeable as losing 60 FPS with VSync on, because it drops to 30 FPS. If you can live with VSync, then use adaptive instead. Also, GSync doesn't get rid of the stutter and screen tearing in every game.

Hmmm ok, i mainly want g sync so i don't notice fps drops as much and don't have to worry about running at constant 60fps all the time. I doubt i'll be running most games over 100fps, except for games like cs go etc.

Not sure i can get a tv around the 27 inch size, also there are 4k g sync monitors around for a reasonable price but i don't think i'm quite ready to make the leap to 4k yet.
In terms of adaptive v sync i find the change from 60 to 30 fps very jarring and often it's only for a few seconds as i hit 60fps again. In terms of g sync not getting rid of the stutter in every game is that due to some games not supporting g sync? It seems like most games do support g sync.

It drops to 30 if you have a 60hz screen, we're talking about 144hz screen.

Doesn't matter, it's the jump from x to y that's worse than gradually increasing or decreasing.

Oh wow i didn't know thats what adaptive vsync does, i'll try playing a few games with that on and see what it's like. thanks
