Okay I want to buy a laptop to basically treat like my mobile desktop. The laptop has a USB 3.1 Type-C connector, and I was wondering if I get a usb3.1 type c to dvi, if it would support 144hz. My intention is to run my benq monitor (144hz), through that laptop. Does anyone have any information on this as I know I can convert the signal, I just dont know if I can retain the 144hz (yes its important fps game ftw)?

Laptop I want (bottom of page for specs)

usb type c adapter I'm questioning

My current monitor

Thanks in advance!

Solution

Definitely not - read the details of that adapter

Adapter Specifications
- Input Computer Connector: USB 3.1...
Couple of issues that would warrant further research (based on what I know and a quick Google).

- I had a look for any USB adapter that would output more than 60hz, could not find one. I'd say this is going to be your main problem
- Opinions seem to be mixed on DVI-D supporting 144hz, some people say yes some people say no.
- What laptop were you looking at getting? My friend has one of these and can't output more than 120Hz (albeit at 1440p) using the displayport connection which has a higher bandwidth than USB 3.1.

I updated first post to hopefully ease future research for anyone who looks into this.

to my knowledge DVI-D only supports 1080p 120hz max or 2k 60hz.

Also Displayport 1.2 has 21.6 Gbit/s of bandwidth which supports that 144hz while 3.1 Type C only supports 10 Gbit/s. Might be why you will never see higher than 60hz.

I have a dvi cable running to my monitor on my desktop with the refresh rate at 144hz no problem. I believe your information may be incorrect (unless windows lies to me!).

Definitely not - read the details of that adapter

Adapter Specifications
- Input Computer Connector: USB 3.1 Type-C male
- Output Display Connector: DVI Single Link
- Supports video resolutions 1920 x1080 @ 60 Hz

Doesn't matter what version spec you buy of that laptop, not gonna get 144hz.

Solution

I only read the top part of the spec on amazon 🙁 Thanks for pointing out the obvious I should have seen.

Hi I have the same issue as you, so did the usb Type C to DVI cable like this

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-3-1-Type-C-Male-to-DVI-Female-1080P-HDTV-Monitor-Adapter-Cable-for-Macbook-/361415443774?hash=item54260a053e:m:mAHlXhkijldGFOGn9TnMZFw

work for you or no it was still 60hz, what was your solution at the end? i only have HDMI and type c out put on my laptop 🙁
