I have a Lenovo Y520 (USB-C and a HDMI 1.4) - I wanted to get an external 144hz monitor since the laptop display is just 60hz. I was wondering how I may be able to do so? A USB-C to DisplayPort? If so, should I look for any relevant monitor with DP to run 144hz?

Solution
After a quick look at the spec sheet, no. the monitor does not support DP over usb c.

Type C is a confusing connector, since it can vary in its features from laptop to laptop.
On the Lenovo Y520 the type c connector seems to just be a usb 3.1 jack, with not displayport connectivity.

I see, so what kind of a monitor should I search for? Like what parameters should I look for to get 120hz?
Firstly, it has to be 1080p.

Any higher and you will be limited to 60 in 1440p, or even 30 fps at 4k.

2nd, just read reviews.
lower latency is better, freesync or gsync are better.
overdrive control is better
More accurate colors a better and brighter screens are better.

Find something that fits in your budget and is well reviewed.

Any 1080p works? Or does the monitor should be HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 too?
