144hz Monitor locked at 60hz with HDMI

Did I miss something here or does HDMI only run at 60hz? I have the Acer GN246HL monitor and when I plug in DVI i have 144hz yet, HDMI doesn't? Explanation please.

HDMI has limited bandwidth and thus only supports 60Hz on anything lower than HDMI 2.0. In fact at 4K, HDMI 1.X only supports refresh rates at 30Hz.
