144hz monitor requirements

Hi I am thinking of purchasing a 144hz monitor but cannot find out if my MSI R7870-2GD5T/OC will support that speed or not, the specs state that it supports dual link DVI but doesn't state as what refresh rate. I should point out that I'm running two R7870-2GD5T/OC in crossfire mode on an i5-3570K CPU with Corsair 8GB Vengeance 1866 based on a Asrock Extreme6 Mobo and an OCZ Fatality 750 watt PSU, Windows 7 (64) installed on a Samsung 250 Evo SSD. The whole system runs very well but I need to replace my monitor and thought that a 144hz monitor would be great for gaming as I can still do photo editing on my second monitor when required. Ive asked this question on the MSI forum with 28 views but no responses. So either no one knows or perhaps it isn't a valid question.

The Answer is yes.As long as you have a dual-Link Dvi and a Disply port on your GPU.Any card can support that resolution but for a single 1080p 144hz monitor two 7870 is decent enough and you should not have any sorts of problem and yes this is a valid question.Two 7870's performance stack up to more than a 7970 and that should ease in games in that monitor bcz of your crossfire setup.

The speed or fps your graphics card runs at is not inherent in the card itself. The fps id determined by how good your card is with that game at those settings and monitor resolution.

Hi thanks for your response I was pretty sure that was the case but wanted to check before I purchased. Regarding whether there is any difference I've read quite a few reviews and they all agreed that the game play is smoother and more fluid on a 144hz monitor which does seem logical. Thanks for your help

There is a difference from 60hz to 144hz when it comes to gaming, but keep in mind to get the full benefit out of a 144hz monitor you want to be running around 100 FPS. if your system is only running games at 60FPS then I would not recommend buying a 144hz monitor, Yes it will be better but not much. If you are running around that 100fps mark the 144hz monitors are going to shine, and you will never want to play at 60hz again. The ASUS VG248QE is a great choice at a good price $270.

I'd say dive into that monitor if you want it whether or not you can run 144 fps. You'll always be able to upgrade the graphics power, and you'll just be upgrading in steps. Enjoy the smoothness!

^^or just lower the in-game settings till you get high enough fps (100+), also your cpu is strong enough so it shouldn't hold you back either.

Ive looked a t the Asus its about £270 here Amazon UK but that's pounds not dollars ouch! i'm looking at a IIyama or a AOC which are quite a bit cheaper but I do think the ASUS is the better of the 3 from what I've read. ASUS is indeed the better of the three; ASUS also has one of the best customer support teams in my opinion.

Hi I bought the AOC 144HZ monitor as it was only £179 from Amazon and couldn't justify spending nearly a £100 extra on the Asus. After some initial problems I now have it sorted as it seems that with crossfire you can only run up to 120hz on any monitor. Above that you have to put an extra bridge between the cards, which you can't with a 7870 as you can only run a 7870 in dual config as they only have a connection for one bridge on each of the cards. Triple and quad configs are not possible with a 7870. But hey You learn something new everyday and a 100% increase is still very significant . You can run it at 144hz in windows and applications just not in games.

However now that is sorted I'm very impressed with the AOC Monitor at 120hz its brilliant and completely does away with the need to use v-sync mode in games which is hardware intensive. Thanks for all your responses
