My monitor is an AOC monitor and out of the box it was at 60hz, with my first pc I was able to get it to 120hz but now in my new gaming PC in nvidia control panel I bump it from 60hz to 120hz and after clicking apply it goes to 120 for a second then goes back to 60 hz please help

Solution

Make sure you are using DisplayPort rather than HDMI :)

I don't know about the nvidia control panel but i've always changed my monitor refresh rate under advance settings tab for the monitor. In windows 7 its > Right Click on desktop > screen resolution > click advance settings > under monitor tab you can change the refresh rate.

That's what I meant.

Please list the MODEL because your post is confusing.

You say it's a 144Hz monitor, but chose 60Hz from the desktop path (144Hz should have been listed there). Then you chose 120Hz but why not 144Hz?

I thought about that but since he was at 120Hz I didn't give it more thought.

But, now after further thought I realized that there's a good chance he WAS using HDMI. It would then only show 60Hz, but forcing 120Hz would also work because the monitor can handle 144Hz.

So yeah, if he hasn't used DP then he should and now should see 144Hz via the normal desktop path for display settings.

*For people with 144Hz monitors I recommend using "HALF Adaptive VSYNC" for NVidia, or the "Dynamic" version with RadeonPro for AMD cards.

That's for demanding games where sustaining 144FPS is not possible, but screen tear is annoying. (not needed if using FREESYNC or GSYNC mode though)

That forces 72FPS VSYNC ON, or if you can't output 72FPS then VSYNC is turned off automatically. It's really handy for some games. Getting some added stutter is usually worse than getting a bit of screen tear. I aim for at least 90% solid 72FPS but if screen tear is too annoying, drop a few settings to raise the average FPS.

For NVidia you do it like this:
NCP-> Manage 3D settings-> add game-> (set VSYNC option) and save

Then test with FRAPS or Steam FPS indicator. You should see 72FPS with VSYNC or some screen tear below 72FPS.
