Question 144hz vs 120hz Confusion

Hello all. I've been playing on an Omen Hp 25" 144Hz display since early last year. I've always been under the assumption that 144hz is obviously the winner over 120 always, but i just switched my in game and display settings to 120hz (In overwatch) and the game feels IMMENSELY smoother. I don't know much about ghosting and all that so maybe my particular monitor ghosts at 144 and not 120? I just don't exactly know what sort of phenomena I'm going through where going down in Hz my gameplay seems much smoother in fast paced areas.

Response time (time for pixels to change color which would cause ghosting) is not affected by hz. Ghosting is an after image and would not be affecting smoothness. If you have vsync on and can't keep 144fps or above then you are going to not be as smooth as a lower hz.
