So this is my dilemma and I'm hoping someone will have an answer. I'm running an Unraid OS using a supermicro server board in a 4u server chassis with the ability to hold 12 3.5" HDDs. I have an EVGA 1000W P3 series modular PSU. Within that system I already have 10 HDDs, 8 x 8TB drives and 2 x 14TB drives. I have 3 of the 8TB drives per SATA power connected daisy chained off one SATA connection, same with the other 8TB drives.
I have the 14TB on their own rail, however Unraid does not see them. I have confirmed it's a power issue, I was able to confirm this because both 14TB refused to show up until I used a molex to SATA adapter and then they powered right up and Unraid was able to see them. I have tried putting them on their own dedicated rail and they still refused to boot when using SATA.
I am not a big fan of having to use the Molex to SATA adapters as there's been instances of them melting and catching fire, I ultimately would like to be able to power them using just the SATA cable. Is the power supply just not capable of pushing that much dedicated power on the rail to these drives? Eventually I will be upgrading all the 8TBs to 14TBs so I'm not opposed to upgrading my PSU or is there something else going on? FYI these are not shucked drives.
