Hi Folks,

I have built a new rig which is a Core i5-9600K based system last November. It's a good system.

BUT my old rig is still functioning. I've figured out that maybe there is a PSU problem which I'm going to fix it with a Corsair CX550M unit purchased recently. The configuration of my old rig is:

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K
Mem: Corsair Dominator 2x4GB DDR3@1866MHz C9-10-9-27
Cooling: Corsair H60 Hydro Series 120MM AIO
Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe
GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX RX 570 4GB O/C *very good card

I find it still very capable for some old games and use it for gaming mainly, no media creation that sort of tasks. As such I like to revamp it with a brand new case. In retrospect, when I put together this machine, I was a bit on a budget so it was setup with only 4x2GB = 8GB (Dual channel). It was pricy at the time DDR3 was.

I want to upgrade the memory capacity and would like to get some of your advices and recommendations.

Performance-wise, would increasing 8GB to16GB make any difference when gaming? If yes, then will 2133MHz with the timing 10-12-12-31 be faster than my current 1866MHz with timing 9-10-9-27?

Thanks for your advice in advance!

Used DDR3 1600 CL9 1.5v 2x8GB kits can be had for $30-50. I bought a 2x8GB 2400 CL11 kit for $55 on ebay. I run that on a Z97 board at 2133 CL10 1.6v.

I would look for a used kit before buying new.

Edit - Hmmm... I had the Window open for awhile before I responded and didn't even realize the topic had moved away from DDR3 ram.

i5-3570K native supports up to 1600mhz, to get a speed higher you have to overclock "XMP". In gaming no you will not see a difference either way beyond 1600mhz.

8gb vs 16gb? Well considering how memory intensive everything has become you better off with more RAM.

BIG thanks delaro, for 6 years, I am not awared that despite it is running at 1866, I'm not getting any advantages in terms of RAM speed.

By the way, why the manual still says it supports 1866 and even 2133?

Folks I think I get my required information here:

What a good lesson.

I have a 9600K system also, and a pair of 3000MHz LPX Vengeance kit, is that the maximum RAM speed for that CPU IF I M NOT OVERCLOCKING?

Depends of your motherboard. You need a Z390 board to reach 3200 MHz with a 9600K. If you have a B365 (or B360) board you will be limited to 2666 MHz as the highest XMP speed
Yes, my mobo is Asus Rog Strix Gaming Z390-F. I should have bought the 3200kit. Currently, it is Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000 low profile.

Did you enable XMP with the Corsair kit ? Does it work ?
The good new is that an Intel platform is much less dependent of RAM speed that an AMD platform. This is due to different CPU architectures.
Between 3000 MHz and 3200 MHz the difference is really peanuts.
And you RAM is on the QVL for your mobo; so, should work at 3000 MHz

If you already bought the LPX 3000mhz kit and theres no free return and if you really want it to run faster speeds you can always overclock, no harm done. Just look for tutorials and prepare yourself, how to reset cmos and load previous bios settings will be needed.
