I'm about to buy my first gaming laptop and I and am trying to decide between two laptops: The ASUS GL703VD with a 17-in screen and the Alienware 15 with a 15-in screen. The ASUS laptop has 16gb RAM but a GTX 1050 with 4gb of VRAM while the Alienware has 8gb RAM with a GTX 1060 with 6GB VRAM. The ASUS costs $200 less than the Alienware if I don't get the model with a 256 GB SSD and if I do then it's only $50 less and the Alienware is much thicker and they have identical CPUs so is it worth to purchase the Alienware which is also only has a 60hz monitor while the ASUS has 120hz just for a better GPU?

I normally don't encourage buying Alienware, but in this case, I'd take the 1060 over the 1050. The RAM on the Alienware should be upgradeable, while the video card on the ASUS is not upgradeable. I'm sure the 120hz on the ASUS would be nice, but you won't be pushing those kind of frames on any newer games with a 1050.

HOWEVER, it does depend on what kind of gaming you do. The ASUS would probably be the better choice for CSGO, for example. CSGO is more processor heavy, and the extra hz on the display would be very helpful for response time in any FPS.

Between the two, I would choose the Alienware.
The amount of VRAM makes almost no difference in performance unless you are running a very high resolution and the game has far above average texture details. I would still choose the Alienware if it only had 4GB of VRAM. The fact that it is a 1060 is what really matters.

Question from sreerram.chavali : "Looking for a Laptop under $1400"

I am looking for a gaming laptop with a 15-in screen with at least a GTX 1060 and 144hz display. I'm one of those people who are obsessed with RGB backlighting and a thin design. I am willing to go a bit over my budget and I am fine with just 8gb of RAM. If you check my profile, you can see that I have recently posted a thread about tow other laptops so that can give you an idea of what I like. I am willing to sacrifice portability for performance if you are wondering.
Thanks!
