I am after my first laptop but not sure what I can get with my limited budget. I have around $1000 what would be the best I could get for or around that? Also I'm looking for US sites to buy from as I am visiting soon and laptops are a lot cheaper there than here😛

Thanks,
Timmymna

If you aren't to concerned about portability or battery life go with a dell. Their laptops are very reasonably priced for what you get. It will probably be almost 2" thick and have a battery life of around 2hrs or less but it will be a decent machine.
If you are after portability and battery life then either go for a lower powered version of a different dell model or go for an ibm thinkpad. It will be slower but it will be very portable and have incredible battery life.

Could look into a dell as long you can tolerate India Support. Could also check with best buy but Id be careful of their service upgrades. A decent laptop start at $1500.00 USD were below that be VERY mindful of the spec of the product and supports. You could get a Dell Inspiron 8600 entry level for around that price and you get up to a 5 hour battery life. I played with the FULLY loaded version of that laptop and was able to get up to a 5.06 hor battery life and was able to use it all the way from Florida to Las Vegas Nevada with battery juice to spare.
