When is 1xEVDO scheduled to be available thru out So. Calif? Anyone
know? And will I need a 5220 card to get max performance from it?

It's anyones guess, i have a PC-5220 card in the Los Angeles area and ( as
of right now) it's showing 1XRTT on the display. DO NOT buy the 3220 card!
you WILL need the 5220 for 1X-EVDO.....

Thanks for the info. What speeds are you finding you can websurf and
download at? On the G3 network I get around 2 to 4 Kilobytes/sec (16
to 32 kbps) for web pages and 9 to 11 KBps (36 to 88 kbps) for
downloads. I understand it should be on the order of 30 times that
fast on 1XRTT. What's your experience?

I think you got that backwards - 1xRTT is the slow one - with numerous
speedtests at dslreports.com my best rates have been about 100k down / 40k
up on 1xRTT (that covers most of the nation right now), and 410k down / 128k
up on "3G" 1xEVDO (in San Diego). Latency seems to be about the same for
both technologies. (100ms - 200ms ping times)
I am using the 5220 card. I do *not* use Venturi compression software.
I've been very pleased with the coverage, signal quality and "stay
connectedness" even inside buildings.

Do any of you who are using the 5220 card know how to get the verizon news
server to work. I am trying to use my DSL acct. I have the E-mail working
but the news server won't work. Tried verizon wireless, they say its the
DSL people, the DSL guy worked with me for 2 hrs and couldn't figure it
out. If they intend to market this as a wireless broadband then they need
to
fix the access problem.

thanks
Paul

Forget the Verizon News server (don't even know if it exists anymore, I
heard they went to giganews), most people use the free german news server
instead. It works really great, and I have been using it for over a year.
They changed the URL (and I don't have the new one), but a google search on
old messages should come up with the new one. I use it instead with a wide
variety of connections (Dial up/LAN/802.11x/Cable/DSL/QWK2NET/NA/Sat etc).

PS The old URL was (German Newserver: News.CIS.DFN.DE Register at
http://news.cis.dfn.de/ (note the final /, required for English)) as I said
tho, it has changed to a new URL for registration. may be something like
news.individual.de now.<-- just a guess...
Correction.. just tried it (it's after 9 and free calls now), and the main
web page (in english) is http://news.individual.net/
I highly recomennd it. If nothing else it works very well and it's free.
