2 7800 256 mb gtx or 7800 512 gtx

Two 7800GTX 256s will wipe the floor with a single 7800GTX 512.
Although I agree with prozac26 in getting an X1900XT, I can't guarantee it'll perform much better than two 7800GTX 256s, but it should be cheaper. Also the X1900 offers high quality anisotropic filtering and OpenEXR+AA support.

Also much easier on the wallet.
I decided I'm not going to get an X1900 now. Upgrading from 7800GTs to an X1900 XT would be a small improvement (If at all) and will leave me without my 500$.

Oh ok i see. So 2 256 actually perform better than one 512. But I should go with the 1900 ati because if offers more eye candy? and possibly a small frame rate difference? oh yea.. the price difference as well.

Well it's your choice. If you prefer Nvidia, two 7800GTX 256MBs will outperform a 512MB by a lot. But for the best price to performance ratio in your market, an X1900 XT would serve you much better.

Am I being senile in stating that I can't see the benefit or logic of dual cards? I'd rather they shrink the gpu die and go for dual core on the same board with high end gpu's - PCI express has enough bandwidth for current apps, and only when that bandwidth is used up can dual card solutions become viable. No offence meant with this statement.

As for dual gtx's or 512gtx - I'd stick to a single card as sli and xfire really doesn't become a life saver in games (ie a game that needs two cards to produce 30fps constant) at this stage, and for pure gaming you only want playable framerates with good image quality - and the gtx (7800/7900) and 1900/1800 are well capable of doing this in single slot mode.

Take the additional money for card nr 2 and get dual core cpu or RAM is what I'd say
