I imaged a sata winXP boot disk (mechanical) and used the image to produce a clone on an ssd of the same size. Two of the machine's sata ports can be configured as native sata or IDE. The ssd will not boot successfully when connected to a sata port , but will boot when the sata port is configured to be IDE.

When trying to boot connected to a sata port, the windows XP splash screen appears but shortly after that the system reboots and the cycle repeats indefinitely.

What's happening here and how can I correct it?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Make and model of your motherboard and SSD? If memory recalls, if you set the storage controller to AHCI, you would have to reinstall the OS if the drive had an OS installed prior with IDE enabled. In the OS install procedure, you'd need to provide drivers in order for the storage controller to recognize your storage drive. This is why you can't go past the splash screen with the storage controller set to AHCI.

Again, I did all of this in the early 2000's. Someone else might be able to confirm the above or to disprove me.

Lutfij you are correct with your info from the past. When installing an old OS always set the Windows Drive to legacy IDE. Windows XP should be installed or cloned on an HDD for best results as far as loading the OS. It should be loaded with a CD ROM. I am not sure why they are using XP no support at all today and NOT internet capable at all. I have Windows XP installed on an old (Socket A) PC, it works well for vintage games but not much more than that in my experience. Cheers.
