Im a dj, I use one pc to sort and arrange my files then i transfer that to my laptop with FeeFileSynce. My laptop is never connected to internet anything i need too put on the laptop i transfer it from the desk top. ok. Recently i switch service providers from cable to dsl, and the dsl is a wireless connection to my desktop. I have a separate router connecting my desktop to my laptop, but it doesnt work, the laptop see the the desktop but the desktop no longer see the laptop, or get internet connect from the wireless, if i disable the wireless network from the desktop the it sees the laptop, if i disconnect to lan connection it gets internet, how can i con figure this properly, How can i get the desktop

update: the laptop does remain to see the shared folders on the desktop. Also at this point i just connected them together with ethernet and the laptop still see the desktop doesnt see laptop...see freefilesync doesnt work

You are essentially on two ddifferent networks if you didnt bridge the other router you are using as well so instead of you recieving an ip from the second unit, the first unit will be handing out your ips to all the devices.I would say you are connecting one device to the dsl wirelessly and the other to the other unit?

Also directly hardwired you would need a crossover cable to connect directly to each other and set yourself in the same network.

Generally a pc will prefer the wire connection over a wireless when you have 2 network connection.

So first be sure you are using different subnets for the 2 networks. You want say 192.168.0.x on one and 192.168.1.x on the other.

The main cause of this problem is you can only have a single default route and windows thinks the one on ethernet is better. The easiest way to fix it is to just remove the gateway on the wired connection. All you do is put in a static ip address rather than use DHCP and leave the gateway field blank.

ok guys im lost, but i have a question, the dsl is wireless to the desktop for internet. I have my old timewarner cable router that still allows my to transfer file with ffs. So i will diable wireless adapter and im able to do transfers. is there a way i can do this but not disable wireless. So lets say im doing a complete music library update on wired and still surf the net wireless. If it is possible, can i get a step by step instruction....cause im hating to have to wait 5hours before i can use internet, while its transferring . the dsl wireless modem/router is downstairs, old cable modem/router is up stairs desktop in port 1 and laptop in port 2

what should those number be, when i say i need help i mean i need examples of what to put in those areas,. I also noticed that the ipv6 on wireless say no access. ill open the ip4 and wait for futher instruction

Form a command prompt window issue IPCONFIG /all You will see the ip and masks that you are currently getting on your wired and wireless connection. Just use the same ip address is the easy way.

To a point you should know this information because you would have had to use it to setup your router.

ok im not able to open any of my shared folders on my laptop from my desktop, it says i dont have permission., and on the desktop the network says unidentified network and is public (wired connection). but i can open things on the desktop from the laptop.

Why not unplug your old timewarner since its not doing anything really.connect both devices to the new unit? Is the timwarner linked via ethernet to tje dsl? If so just go into the device settings and bridge it essentially turning it into a dumb switch/ap if you want it to.

Basically what happened is your ethernet connection is now setup as public vs home limiting usage to devices for protection just go to control panel and network and sharing center from there click where it says public and change it to home if that does not come up google network stuck on public vs home

If you need assistance please let me know i could do a teamviewer session and do thithis all for you. Have helped a few people out this way already

my telephone jack is downstairs, so the dsl router is there, Only way to connect is wireless since my desktop upstairs. Im using the oldtimewarner router just to transfer files from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, no internet for laptop.

I can see the shared folders for both...but i cant open them

Yes now i see how it is setup if the signal isnt strong enough to connect both devices on the dsl downstairs so you can transfer files and be on the internet thethe only easy solution is a decent power line adapter so you can link the two devices together and bridge the timewarner and use the dsl to control the network that way you can havw one device on the dsl and one on the twcdevice via hardwire or wireless and be on the same network.

You may be able to see the shared folder but if you arent on the same network they wont connect.
