hi all

i hope someone can help me with this issue, for some strange reason my router has given my laptop and my desktop the same ip address, this wouldnt bother me but now when i use vnc on my phone and ipad i can now no longer conect, i cant work out why this has happend

Check TCP/IP Properties on both computers.

Start, Connect To, Connection, Properties, Scroll Down TCP/IP and highlight, click Properties and check that Obtain DNS and IP address automatically are enabled.

I think I would also check that DHCP is turned on in the router.

Maybe there are two DHCP server in your network. Check on both pc who's assigning your IP address.
At the command prompt type IPCONFIG /ALL and check what's your DHCP server.
If the two pc have the same DHCP server it's still a mistery. If they have 2 different DHCP server you must disable one of them.

What router and other equipment do you have on your network? How long has it been since you've had the laptop on the network.

The DHCP server in the router hands out IP's, but doesn't nessecarally hand out the same IP to the same computer every time. Once it gives an IP it also gives the computer a lease, an ammount of time that it will use that IP. After the lease time is up the computer must request to renew that lease. If the computer is off, the IP becomes available for another computer to use.

The only way to guarentee that the computer's IP address doesn't change is to use a static IP, but you don't want to use an IP that is in the range that your rotuer uses for DHCP. If you want to go that way we can help.
